Architectures of (Non-)Aggression: A Comparative Analysis of Selected Works of Dystopian Fiction

Abstract:

Záměrem této práce je srovnání čtyř děl dystopické fikce: Fahrenheit 451 od Raye Bradburyho, Pána much od Williama Goldinga, a filmů Equlibrium (2002) od režiséra Kurta Wimmera a Gattaca (1997) od Andrewa Niccola. Za užití poznatků Abrahama Maslowa tato práce zkoumá spektrum okolností, za jakých je jedinec vystaven silám sociálního podmiňování. První část této práce se zabývá problematikou vztahu žánrů utopické a dystopické fikce. Za využití poznatků Darko Suvina a jeho konceptu novum se tato kapitola zabývá vztahem těchto žánrů k žánru science fiction. Za pomoci Maslowovi „Teorie Motivace“ tato práce argumentuje, že zatímco nižší potřeby jsou jasně ohraničené a definovatelné ve své podobě, vyšší lidské potřeby jsou ve své podobě více nestálé a snadno se tak stávají objektem manipulace sil represivních paradigmat. Tato práce argumentuje, že ačkoliv společnosti, které uspokojují vyšší potřeby jedince, jsou obecně efektivnější a stabilnější, nesmí se tak stát za cenu neschopnosti naplnit nižší potřeby jedince. Dále je argumentováno, že taková paradigmata nevyhnutelně selhávají a skrze prvek strachu jsou nahrazována paradigmaty alternativními, která slibují tyto potřeby naplnit. Ve třetí kapitole je využíváno poznatků J. B. Calhouna a jeho experimentu Universe 25 a tyto poznatky jsou aplikovány ve vztahu k představě prostoru, která, na rozdíl od ostatních literárních žánrů, hraje aktivní roli v definování dystopického chápání prostředí a prostoru. Poslední část této práce uvozuje souvislosti mezi konceptem sebeaktualizace Abrahama Maslowa a konceptu vůle k moci Friedricha Nietzscheho. Komplementarita těchto konceptů je posouzena v kontextu předchozí analýzy a je naznačeno, že tyto dva pojmy representují dva póly jednoho spektra vymezeného egotismem a altruismem.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze to analyze four pieces of dystopian fiction: Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, and the movies Equilibrium (2002) directed by Kurt Wimmer, and Gattaca (1997) by Andrew Niccols. Drawing on Maslow’s ‘Hierarchy of Needs,’ this thesis seeks to explore the number of ways in which the individual is subjected to the forces of social conditioning. In the first part of the thesis, the somewhat ambiguous relationship between the genres of utopian and dystopian fiction is explored. The relationship of these genres to the genre of science fiction is discussed using the concept of novum by Darko Suvin. Drawing on Maslow, the main argument of this thesis holds that while the lower needs are far more clearly defined in their form and are, therefore, more easily recognizable, the higher needs are far more volatile in this respect and are constantly manipulated by the forces of the repressive paradigms. This thesis argues that while the societies that successfully satiate the higher needs of the individual are generally more efficient and long-lasting, this must not come at the cost of failing to fulfill the individual’s lower needs. It is argued that such paradigm will inevitable fails through the element of fear to a parallel one that promises to fulfill these needs. Drawing on J. B. Calhoun’s experiment Universe 25, this work deals with the notion of space as an important aspect of utopian and dystopian fiction which, unlike other literary genres, plays an active role in defining the dystopian understanding of the environment. Lastly, a parallel is drawn between Maslow’s concept of self-actualization and the Nietzschean concept of the will to power. The complementarity of these tow concepts is assessed in the context of the analysis, and it is suggested that the two represent sides of the spectrum with egotism on one hand and altruism on the other.
