The Picture of the Labourer in "What the Paraguayan Yerba Fields Are" by Rafael Barrett

Abstract:

This Bachelor thesis is meant to demonstrate, on the basis of memoirs by the writer Rafael Barrett, that slavery has taken place under the law enacted in Paraguay at the time after the so called Paraguay war. At the same time, it will attempt to demonstrate, in general, the living conditions of a labourer at the yerba fields. The thesis is divided into two parts, theoretical and practical. The former deals with social and philosophical ideas in Spain during the 20th century. Furthermore, it also considers the history of the territory of Río de la Plata in Latin America after the abovementioned war and the literary work of Rafael Barrett. In the latter, the focus is on the analysis of the book Lo que son los yerbales paraguayos. The research conducted discovers the style in which the book was written, particularly, on the perception of slavery among simple people and the overall living standard of the given era in Paraguay from the point of view of Rafael Barrett.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce bylo poukázat prostřednictvím zápisků žurnalisty a spisovatele Rafaela Barretta na otroctví, ke kterému docházelo pod záštitou zákona v Paraguayi, v období po tzv. Paraguayské válce, a zároveň ve všeobecné rovině demonstrovat životní podmínky dělníka na cesmínových plantážích. Práce je rozdělena do dvou hlavních částí, teoretické a praktické. Teoretická část byla věnována jednak sociálním a filozofickým idejím ve Španělsku na počátku 20. století, dále historii na území Río de la Plata v Latinské Americe v době po zmíněné válce a v neposlední řadě životu a dílu Rafaela Barretta. Praktická část byla zaměřena na analýzu díla Lo que son los yerbales paraguayos. Zjišťován byl způsob, jakým bylo dílo napsané, jak je v něm zobrazeno otroctví prostého obyvatelstva a rovněž tak celkové životní podmínky dělníka té doby v Paraguayi z pohledu Rafaela Barretta.
