Revealing deception during recognition of familiar faces: an eye tracking study

Abstract:

Aspirací diplomové práce je odhalování nepravdivých výroků při rozpoznávání známých tváří. K tomuto účelu využívá práce eye trackingové technologie. Práce zahrnuje výsledky osmnácti participantů, kterým byly v průběhu prezentace známých a neznámých tváří snímány oční pohyby. Hlavními zkoumanými dimenzemi je počet fixací, jejich délka, podíl těchto fixací v a mimo oblasti zájmu (oči, ústa, nos) a reakční čas. Práce odhalila vyšší podíl fixací ve vnitřní oblasti tváře u známých tváří, kratší reakční čas a větší závislost na oblasti zájmu očí ve srovnání s tvářemi neznámými. Tyto trendy se potvrdily nezávisle na tom, zda se participant pokoušel lhát, nebo ne. Mohou tím pádem sloužit jako metrika, která by mohla být využita v policejním vyšetřování při odhalování lží u rozpoznávání tváří. Práce mimo jiné nabízí také teoretické zázemí tématu rozpoznávání tváří včetně spojitosti s eye trackingem.

Abstract:

This thesis employs eye tracking technology in order to find connection between eye movements and deception during recognition of familiar faces. The study works with eighteen healthy individuals, whose eye movements were scanned during the presentation of known and unknown faces. The main metrics were the number of fixations, their length, the proportion of the fixations to selected areas of interest (eyes, nose, mouth). Apart of that, reaction time until the recognition was measured. The work succeeded in finding higher proportion of fixation to the inner regions of the face for the known faces. Also, a shorter reaction time was confirmed and stronger dependency on eye region for known faces compared to the unknown faces. This trends have been supported regardless lying or truthful condition. They could be therefore potentially employed as a metric used in police interrogation in order to reveal deceptive statements in face recognition. Apart of the practical part, the work offers an overview of recent eye tracking studies concerning the face recognition topic.
