The relationship between academic procrastination and locus of control and basic psychological needs derived from the Self-Determination Theory

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo prozkoumat vztah akademické prokrastinace k locus of control a základním psychologickým potřebám autonomie a kompetence, vycházející z teorie sebedeterminace. Výzkumný soubor tvořili vysokoškolští studenti, celkem 110 studentů z toho 82 žen a 28 mužů. Výzkum proběhl dotazníkovým šetřením, byly tedy použity postupy kvantitativního výzkumu. Pro měření akademické prokrastinace byla použita Laylova škála prokrastinace pro studenty. Pro měření locus of control byl použit dotazník The internal control index a pro měření základních psychologických potřeb byl použit dotazník Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction Scale – in General. Výsledky výzkumu podpořily naše hypotézy, že akademická prokrastinace negativně koreluje s vnitřním locus of control a naplněním potřeby kompetence. Naše hypotéza, že akademická prokrastinace negativně koreluje s naplněním potřeby autonomie, nebyla podpořena. Naše hypotézy, že prokrastinující studenti s vnitřním locus of control, jsou více orientováni na potřeby autonomie a kompetence než prokrastinující studenti s vnějším locus of control, byly podpořeny. Dále byly podpořeny hypotézy, že vnitřní locus of control pozitivně koreluje s naplněním potřeby autonomie a kompetence.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between academic procrastination and locus of control and the basic psychological needs of autonomy and competence derived from Self-Determination Theory. The research sample consisted of 110 university students at total, which 82 were women and 28 men. Data were collected trough an online survey and we used quantitative research procedures. Layle's procrastination scale for students was used to measure academic procrastination. The internal control index was used to measure locus of control and the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction Scale - in General was used to measure basic psychological needs. The results of study supported our hypotheses, that academic procrastination negatively correlates with internal locus of control and with fulfillment of the competence need. Our hypothesis that academic procrastination negatively correlates with fulfillment of the autonomy need, was not supported. Our hypotheses, that procrastinated students with internal locus of control were more oriented towards the needs of autonomy and competence, than procrastinated students with external locus of control, were supported. The hypothesis, that the internal locus of control positively correlates with fulfillment of the autonomy and competence needs, were also supported.
