Nonverbal communication in British and Japanese culture

Abstract:

This thesis concentrates on aspects of intercultural communication. Two cultures, British and Japanese, were compared with the emphasis on nonverbal communication and it focuses on clothes as an expression of personality. These concepts were explained in the first, theoretical, part of the thesis. In the second part the analysis was carried out. At first aspects such as religion, educiation and language are compared. The comparison of these two countries is also based on Hofstede?s dimensions. Later, the analysis focuses on aspects of nonverbal communication. The thesis further concentrates on the comparison of London and Tokyo?s subcultural styles. The analysis was based on their description, characteristics and historical background. Subsequently, character of British and Japanese subcultures was compared.

Abstract:

Táto práca sa zaoberá aspektami interkultúrnej komunikácie a zameriava sa na jednu jej oblasť. Dve kultúry, japonská a britská, boli podrobené kultúrnej analýze z hľadiska neverbálnej komunickácie a v rámci nej sa kladol dôraz na obliekanie ako prejav osobnosti. Z teoretického hľadiska boli tieto koncepty vysvetlené v prevej časti práce. V druhej časti, analytickej, práca porovnáva rôzne aspekty britskej a japonskej kultúry, ako náboženstvo, školstvo, jazyk a tiež sú tieto krajiny porovnané na základe Hofstedeho dimenzií. Následne, sa práca zameriava na neverbálnu komunikácu a na porovnanie všetkých jej aspektov. Práca bola ďalej zameraná na porovnanie subkultúrnych štýlov hlavných miest týchto krajín. Ich analýza bola vykonaná na základe ich opisu, charakteristiky a historického kontextu, v ktorom vznikli. Následne bol porovnaný charakter britských a japonských subkutltúr.
