The language of instructions: Analysis of the cabin crew operational manual

Abstract:

The goal of this thesis is to make an analysis of the document Cabin Crew Operations Manual, which is used by flight attendants in international aviation. The analysis focuses on the parts of the document which contain communication between flight attendants and other people. This thesis explores lexical and morphosyntactic features that can be found in this document. The emphasized part of this anaylsis is the context in which the comunications occur. The analysis also explores politeness that is essentially connected to the work with people. Beside communication, the analysis also explores the topic of mnemonic aids usage, which helps the flight attendants with the procedures memorization and which allows fast reactions in an emergency situation.

Abstract:

Cílem práce je analýza dokumentu Cabin Crew Operations Manual, který používají palubní průvodčí v mezinárodní letecké dopravě. Analýza se zaměřuje na části dokumentu, které obsahují komunikaci palubních průvočích s jinými lidmi. Práce zkoumá lexikální a morfosyntaktické prvky, které se v tomto dokumentu vyskytují. Důraz se v analýze klade na kontext, ve kterém jsou jednotlivé konverzace uskutečněny. Analýza rovněž zkoumá zdvořilost, která se k práci s lidmi neodmyslitelně pojí. Kromě komunikace je rovněž zkoumáno používání mnemotechnických pomůcek, které pomáhají palubním průvodčím se zapamatováním postupů a tím umožňují rychlé jednání v nouzových situacích.
