Media diversity and its possible measurement: Lidové noviny and MF Dnes before and after acquisition by the Rheinisch-Bergische Druckerei- und Verlagsgesellschaft

Abstract:

Media diversity is, in the countries of the Euro-American cultural area, one of the key questions. The states try to protect it by means of legislation regulating ownership issues. The main assumption is that the concentration of ownership is reducing diversity, but the empirical evidences of this thesis are inconsistent. One of the most important reason of this status is, in our opinion, the methodic complexity of the concept of diversity. In our thesis, we tried to elaborate the concept of diversity into measurable components, and to suggest a research instrument by which this problem could be explored. The relevance of our research instrument was tested against the case of acquisition by the Rheinisch- Bergische Druckerei- und Verlagsgesellschaft company, since 1994 the owner of MF Dnes newspaper, which bought in September 1998 the newspaper Lidové noviny. We presumed that the content and formal diversity of these newspapers would have diminished after the acquisition. This hypothesis was not confirmed. Our research instrument appeared to be proper and relevant, although in the conclusion we had to allege that the threat of the loss of media diversity in these times is mostly due to the continuous application of the same values, of the same viewpoint, and of the same logic, which is something that our model (and the method of content analysis) can capture only in a very limited way. That is why research in media diversity should be amended by a method of qualitative research.

Abstract:

Mediálna diverzita patrí v krajinách euro-americkej kultúrnej oblasti ku kľúčovým otázkam. Jednotlivé štáty sa ju snažia ochrániť predovšetkým prostredníctvom legislatívy regulujúcej vlastnícke pomery. Vychádza sa teda z predpokladu, že koncentrácia vlastníctva znižuje diverzitu, aj keď empirické dôkazy tejto tézy sú rozporuplné. Jednou z najdôležitejších príčin tohto stavu je podľa nášho názoru metodologická zložitosť konceptu diverzity. V našej práci sme sa preto pokúsili rozpracovať koncept diverzity na merateľné komponenty, a navrhnúť výskumný nástroj, prostredníctvom ktorého by sa dal tento problém skúmať. Relevanciu výskumného nástroja sme testovali na prípade akvizície spoločnosti Rheinisch- Bergische Druckerei- und Verlagsgesellschaft, ktorá od roku 1994 vlastní denník MF Dnes, a v septembri roku 1998 k nemu prikúpila i denník Lidové noviny. Predpokladali sme, že obsahová i formálna diverzita týchto denníkov sa po akvizícii zníži. To sa však nepotvrdilo. Samotný výskumný nástroj sa ukázal ako vhodný a relevatný, aj keď sme v závere museli konštatovať, že ohrozenie mediálnej diverzity v súčasnosti spočíva najmä v stabilnom presadzovaní tých istých hodnôt, toho istého pohľadu a tej istej logiky, čiže v niečom, čo náš model (a aj metóda obsahovej analýzy) dokáže zachytiť len veľmi obmedzene. Skúmanie mediálnej diverzity je teda vhodné doplniť i niektorou z metód kvalitatívneho výskumu.
