GDPR impact on Information Security Incident detection and response

Abstract:

Tento dokument sa zameriava na to, ako sa musí zmeniť súčasná detekcia a reakcia na bezpečnostné incidenty, aby boli v súlade so všeobecným nariadením o ochrane údajov (GDPR) a aké preventívne opatrenia je možné zaviesť. Teoretická časť dokumentu pozostáva z opisu procesu reakcie na bezpečnostné incidenty, GDPR predpisu a zdôraznení spolupráce medzi bezpečnostnými tímami a tímami zodpovedným za ochranu údajov. Reforma GDPR predpisuje, čo spoločnosti musia zaviesť alebo dodržiavať, ale nehovorí o tom, ako to treba dosiahnuť alebo implementovať, čo ponecháva veľa priestoru na rôzne interpretácie. Výskumná časť tejto práce sa preto zameriava na analýzu toho, čo je potrebné urobiť v oblasti detekcie a reakcie na bezpečnostné incidenty, najmä ako by malo vyzerať hlásenie narušenia bezpečnosti, komu, ako a kedy ho oznámiť. Práca ďalej skúma rôzne technologické a organizačné opatrenia, ktoré môže spoločnosť vykonať, aby bola v súlade s GDPR. Zahŕňa tiež reálny príklad implementácie systému SAP S / 4 HANA ERP v systéme Azure Cloud, aby sa demonštrovalo, ako takáto „secure by design“ implementácia funguje v praxi. Okrem toho bol prevedený dotazníkový prieskum s cieľom získať reálny prehľad o tom, ako sa GDPR implementuje v rôznych spoločnostiach.

Abstract:

The focus of this paper is on how security incident detection and response need to evolve to be compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and which preventative measures can be put in place. Theoretical part of the document consists of the overview of the Incident Response and GDPR regulation, highlighting required collaboration between security and privacy teams. GDPR reform prescribes what companies need to be able to do, or comply with, but it doesn’t say how this needs to be accomplished or implemented, leaving lot of space for various interpretation. The research part of this thesis therefore focuses on the analysis of what needs to be done in the area of Security Incident Detection and Response – in particular, how reporting of a breach should look like, whom, how and when to notify. It further examines different technological and organizational measures which company can implement in order to be compliant to the GDPR. It also includes a real-life example of implementation of the SAP S/4 HANA ERP system on Azure Cloud, to demonstrate how such a secure by design implementation works in practice. Additionally, a questionnaire survey was conducted to get a real-life overview of how the GDPR is implemented in different companies.
