Influence of Tool Surface on Polymer Flow

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce se zabývá vlivem drsnosti povrchu dutiny formy na zatečení polymeru. Předchozí studie ukázaly, že vyšší hodnota drsnosti povrchu formy nejen že nebrání toku polymeru dutinou formy, ale naopak v mnoha případech tok zlepšuje. Cílem této práce je získat hlubší poznání o tokovém chování polymerní taveniny v dutině formy. Měření bylo realizováno za použití 4 typů polypropylenu, které se od sebe liší indexem toku taveniny. Zkušební tělesa byla vyráběna za použití 5 různých povrchů, 3 teplot taveniny a 3 teplot formy. Následně byla provedena měření smáčivosti povrchu desek testovací formy, replikace povrchu dutiny formy a stupeň krystalinity v různých vzdálenostech od vtoku. Práce dále zahrnovala vyhodnocení tokových závislostí na vstřikovacím stroji při procesních podmínkách a zjištění přítomnosti skluzu na stěně. Z poznatků pak byly navrženy konkrétní doporučení pro nastavení technologických parametrů či úpravy nástroje pro technické aplikace v praxi.

Abstract:

This doctoral thesis deals with the effect of injection mold surface roughness on polymer flow. Previous studies have shown that a higher value of mold surface roughness does not hinder the flow of polymer through the mold cavity, but on the contrary in many cases improves the flow. The aim of this work is to gain a deeper understanding of the flow behavior of the polymer melt in the mold cavity. Four types of polypropylene that differ from each other in melt flow index were used in the measurement. Test specimens were produced using five different surfaces, three melt temperatures and three mold temperatures. The conclusions were made by measuring the wettability of the surface of the test mold plates, the replication of the surface of the mold cavity and the degree of crystallinity at different distances from the gate. The work also included the evaluation of flow curves on the injection machine under process conditions and the detection of the presence of wall slip. Based on the findings, specific recommendations were proposed for setting technological parameters or modifying the tool for technical applications in practice.
