Fostering Learners' Motivation and Autonomy by Using the Modern Technology in a Specially Designed Afterschool Club

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce zkoumá vliv používání moderních technologií, v hodinách mimoškolního kroužku zaměřeného na výuku anglického jazyka, zejména v oblasti rozvoje motivace a autonomie žáků. Teoretická část je zaměřena především na popis aspektů nezbytných pro úspěšné provedení kurzu. Uvedené kapitoly seznamují čtenáře se základními informacemi o náctiletých žácích, prezentují deset pravidel pro zvýšení motivace a krátce se zmiňují o důležitosti sociálního prostředí a vzájemných vztahů v hodinách. Největší důraz je kladen na osvětlení termínu motivace, autonomie a jejich vzájemného propojení. Poslední kapitola pak uvádí užitečné typy pro využití moderní technologie právě v hodinách angličtiny. Praktická část popisuje vývoj samotného kurzu a jeho dopad na oblasti zmíněné v teoretické části. Autor zde detailněji objasňuje volbu tématu a jeho hlavní cíle. Kapitoly jsou zaměřeny na postup a proces vytváření celého kurzu, představují metody sběru dat, jejich analýzu a výsledky. Poslední kapitola se vrací k jednotlivým problémům a uvádí určité alternace, které by mohly do budoucna podpořit a vylepšit jeho kvalitu.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis examines the influence of using modern technology in ELT in a specially designed afterschool club and its contribution to increasing the learners’ motivation and subsequently their autonomy. The theoretical part focuses on a brief introduction into the aspects necessary for the successful execution of the designed course. The chapters acquaint the reader with basic information about young teenagers; introduce ten vital suggestions for increasing their motivation and shortly deal with the importance of the rapport and the learning environment. The greatest emphasis is put on the description of the term motivation, autonomy and their relationship. The last chapter presents some useful tips on using technology in a language classroom. The practical part describes the very course itself and its impact on the areas mentioned in the theoretical part. The author justifies the grounds for focusing on such a topic and explains the main aims of the study. The chapters depict the whole process of creating the course; introduce the data collection methods and their analysis as well as the results of the whole research. The last chapter is devoted to the clarification of the encountered problems and suggests some possible modifications and alternations for a future improvement.
