Contour lines - concept of the method in Czech and world cartography

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce je typem literární rešerše, jejíž náplní je popsat do detailů metodu vrstevnic pro znázorňování výškopisu na mapách. Práce se nejdříve zabývá obecně metodou izolinií a jejich konstrukcí a poté konkrétněji vrstevnicemi včetně jejich historie. Kromě vrstevnic je část práce věnována také dalším metodám pro znázorňování výškopisu. Dále se práce zaměřuje na význam vrstevnic v době digitálních modelů. Při porovnávání těchto dvou metod bylo zjištěno, že digitální modely nahradily vrstevnice v uchovávání výškopisných dat, ale ve vizualizaci dat jsou vrstevnice zatím nenahraditelné. V další části práce je snaha o vystihnutí konvencí při použití vrstevnic v české kartografii a jejich následné porovnání s vybranými státy světa a poukázání na všechny odlišnosti. Pro toto porovnání byly použity oficiální topografické mapy, které jsou volně dostupné na webových stránkách vládních organizací jednotlivých států. Ukázalo se, že každá země se řídí podle svých pravidel pro znázorňování výškopisu, které nejlépe vystihují místní reliéf a nejvíce vyhovují místním obyvatelům. Tato pravidla jsou uplatněná ve státních mapových dílech. V závěru práce je zhodnocení metody a autorův osobní pohled.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis is a form of literary research which aims to describe in detail the method of contour lines for representing elevation on maps. The thesis begins by discussing isolines in general and their construction, and then specifically focuses on contour lines including their historical context. In addition to contour lines, part of the thesis is also devoted to other methods for representing elevation. Furthermore, the thesis focuses on the importance of contours in the age of digital models. In comparing the two methods, it was found that digital models have replaced contours in storing elevation data, but in data visualization contours are irreplaceable yet. In the next part of the thesis, there is effort to trace the conventions in the use of contours in Czech cartography and then compare them with selected countries of the world and highlight all differences. For this comparison were used an official topographic maps that are freely available on the websites of governmental organisations of individual countries. It turned out that each country follows its own rules for the representation of elevation which best describe the local relief and best suit the local population. These rules are applied in state map series. In conclusion there is an evaluation of the method and the author's personal view.
