Agile adoption in corporation with the research on SCRUM deviations

Abstract:

Táto práca je zameraná na popis agilných metód vývoja softvéru a ich implementácia v európskej agentúre ECDC v multi-projektovom a multi-tímovom vývojovom prostredí. Ďalej popisuje odchýlky implementácie v ECDC od klasickej metódy Scrum. Pre plánovanie a sledovanie vývoja softvéru na ECDC sa používa Team Foundation Server (TFS). TFS databáza obsahuje všetky údaje o plánovaní úloh a monitorovaní úloh pre každého vývojára, vývojový tím a projekt vývoja softvéru. Metriky používané na sledovanie procesu vývoja boli študované a niektoré z nich boli vybrané ako vhodné pre ECDC. Pre vybrané metriky bola vyvinutá správa pomocou MS SQL server reporting service (SSRS) na základe údajov zhromaždených v dátovom sklade TFS. Správa bola vytvorená pre každý vývojový tím od Šprintu 18 v roku 2014 v ECDC. Posledná časť práce je venovaná analýze dát z Scrum metrickej správy. Hodnoty vybraných ukazovateľov boli analyzované v priebehu času pre tri vývojové tímy. Vypočítané hodnoty boli porovnané s očakávanými prahmi. Prípady, keď sú hodnoty mimo očakávaného rozsahu prahov sú popísané s možnými vysvetleniami tohto správania. Scrum metrická správa je v pravidelnom užívaní v ECDC. Ďalšou možnosť zlepšenia správy by mohlo byť je rozšírenie na ďalšiu úroveň detailov – vytvorenie pre každý projekt vývoja softvéru. V prípade, že v budúcnosti sa správa ukáže byť užitočná môže byť ponúkaná ako súčasť TFS tak ako ostatné grafy a správy, ktoré sú súčasťou systému.

Abstract:

This thesis is aimed to describe the agile methods of software development and their implementation at European Agency ECDC in multi-project and multi-team development environment. It also describes the deviations of the implementation at ECDC from the classic Scrum method. For planning and monitoring of software development at ECDC is used Team Foundation Server (TFS). TFS database contains all the data about task planning and task monitoring for each developer, development team and software development project. Metrics used to follow up the development process were studied and several of them were selected as appropriate for ECDC. For the selected metrics the Scrum metric report was developed using the MS SQL server reporting service (SSRS) on data collected in the TFS data warehouse. The report was produced for each development team from the Sprint 18 in year 2014 at ECDC. The last part of the thesis is dedicated to analysis of data from the Scrum metrics report. Values of selected metrics were analyzed throughout time for the three development teams. The calculated values were compared to the expected thresholds. Cases when the values are outside the expected range of the thresholds are described with possible explanations of this behaviour. The Scrum metric report is at regular use at ECDC. Further possible improvement of the report could be enlargement for another level of detail -- to create it for each software development project. If the report proves to be useful in the future it can be offered as a part of the TFS like the other metric graphs and reports that are already part of the system.
