The influence of mass media on the transformation of value orientation in the cultural milieu of western society

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se věnuje vývoji masových médií a tomu, jaký vliv mají na společnost. První část se snaží o stručné definování toho, co to vlastně jsou masová média a jak rozličně jsou chápána. Dále práce popisuje počátky masmédiií od antiky po raný novověk, to jest období, které ještě nevyužívalo masových nástrojů založených na pokročilých technologiích, a přesto elita již byla schopna skrze masmédia ovlivňovat široké masy. Na tyto kapitoly navazuje popis fungování masových médií od průmyslové revoluce do konce dvacátého století, což už je z pohledu technických možností, změn společenského řádu a s nimi související urbanizace období nástupu tradičních masových médií, jako je tisk, rozhlas, televize a internet. Poslední část práce se věnuje zejména vlivu médií na společnost, prezentuje názory některých významných sociologů a zabývá se expanzí konzumní společnosti.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the development of mass media and with the impact they have on society. The first part deals with a brief definition of what mass media are and how variously are perceived. Then the thesis describes the beginning of mass media from antiquity to the early modern era, that is, a period that have not used the mass tools based on advanced technologies yet, although the elite had already been able to influence broad masses through the mass media. These chapters are followed by the description of the functioning of mass media from the Industrial Revolution to the late twentieth century, which is in terms of technical capabilities, changes in the social order and related urbanisation already an era of the onset of the traditional mass media, such as print, radio, television and internet. The last part of the thesis deals especially with the influence of media on society, presents the views of some prominent sociologists and deals with the expansion of consumer society.
