Construction of Load Bearing Walls of the Morava-Panonian Type of Rural House with the Emphasis on Clay Building in the Region of Hana.

Abstract:

Předložená disertační mapuje konstrukce stěn venkovských staveb na střední Moravě, v etnografickém regionu Haná. Geograficky se v rámci tzv. velkých typologických skupin jedná o severní okraj oblasti s výskytem panonského typu domu, jenž má jádro ve středním Podunají. Oproti synteticky pojatým pracím o lidovém stavitelství badatelů předchozích generací jsem primárně zaměřil svoji pozornost převážně na materiál a konstrukce nosných stěn staveb s důrazem na hliněné stavitelství. Při zpracování tématu jsem vycházel z historického pojetí studia etnologie, čemuž odpovídala i použitá metodologie. Výsledkem byla komparace velkého množství pramenného materiálu nejrůznější povahy, literatury a údajů získaných při terénním výzkumu. V úvodní části srovnávám archeologický materiál z Moravy a přilehlých oblastí, který dokládá použití hlíny v konstrukcích nosných stěn staveb. Poznatky zároveň dávám do souvislosti s etnologickými analogiemi. Výklad o recentních dokladech jsem započal u nejjednodušších variant stěn staveb – totiž hloubených konstrukcí. Ty měly v regionu, zejména díky vhodnému geologickému podloží, dlouhou tradici. Jednalo se o využití zahloubených prostor především z hospodářských a obranných důvodů, pouze ojedinělé doklady zachycují využívání podzemních objektů i jako obydlí nouzového charakteru. Kapitolám o mnohotvárnosti hliněného stavitelství na Hané předchází pojednání o používání dřeva, které v místním stavitelství hrálo roli dominantní stavební hmoty pravděpodobně až do sklonku raného novověku. Na hanáckém venkově se v souvislosti se dřevem zachovala řada archaických stavebních postupů, i když se jejich používání většinou už ve druhé polovině 19. století postupně vytratilo. Doloženy jsou i pravděpodobné důvody, které vedly k ústupu dřeva jako hlavního stavebního materiálu. Hlavním tématem disertační práce byla zaniklá tradice hliněného stavitelství na Hané. Při terénním výzkumu se mi podařilo objevit v regionu zatím nepopsanou techniku tzv. vrstveného zdiva v komorové části původně asi pozdně středověkého objektu. U tohoto jednoduchého a současně nejstaršího způsobu stavění spočívá princip v tom, že je homogenizovaná hliněná směs s příměsí slámy v amorfní podobě kladena ve vrstvách do stěny. Největší pozornost je v disertační práci věnována stavebním způsobům za použití kusového staviva – hliněných válků. Termín válek jako označení pro různě formovaný stavební díl, tvořený směsí hlíny a nejčastěji řezané slámy, prošel během doby významovým posunem. Ten měl na Hané spíše geografický charakter. V její severní části byl vnímán jako samostatný konstrukční prvek použitý u nosného zdiva, kdežto na jihu se v archaické podobě jednalo spíš o doplňkový, tedy nenosný, díl u dřevěných stěn, případně u vodorovných konstrukcí; takto byl ale označován také umělý břeh z hlíny ve smyslu hráze proti povodním. K etymologii podstatného jména válek je dnes obecně přijat názor Václava Machka, který tento název vyvozuje od způsobu přípravy jednotlivých stavebních částí (tedy od slovesa váleti). V úvahu přichází i možný původní název jednotlivého prvku pro stavění valu. Termín válek, jako označení pro jednotlivý stavební díl, se vyskytuje i v jiných oblastech obývaných Slovany (především východními). Použití proschlých stavebních prvků postupně získalo v místním hliněném stavitelství dominantní postavení. Dodnes se dají v terénu vysledovat díly tvarované odhadem jen v rukách a pojené hliněnou maltou. e větší míře pravděpodobně uplatňovat od sklonku 18. století Jednou z odpovědí na otázku, proč cihelné zdivo postupně vytlačilo předchozí stavební způsoby, může být ta, že zmíněné archaické postupy se v jistém smyslu mohly jevit jako limitující po stránce vyšších nároků na konstrukci staveb. Nespornou předností použití nepálených cihel se ukázala především variabilita konstrukčního řešení. Pomocí tohoto materiálu se na Hané stavělo až do poloviny 20. století. Podrobně jsou v textu rozebrána konstrukční řešení válkových staveb v oblasti Hané, jejich vizuální podobnost k některým typům kamenného zdiva a vzájemné souvislosti s jinými technikami pracujícími při stavbách stěn s nepálenou hlínou. Ve starší vrstvě se jednalo spíše o nahodilou podobu jednotlivých prvků, ze kterých bylo budováno zdivo. V pozdější době již přesnější tvar měly a při jejich použití byly dodržovány jednotné skladebné postupy. Nejznámější pak jsou, díky množství recentních dokladů z oblasti střední Moravy, objekty s tzv. klasovitým kladením stěn. Tato vazba byla některými autory připodobňována k jednomu ze základních stavebních postupů uplatňovaných v období antiky a známých pod poněkud nepřesným označením opus spicatum. Součástí této kapitoly jsou rovněž podrobnosti z vlastního terénního výzkumu, během něhož jsem zjistil dosud neznámou strukturu válků trojúhelníkového tvaru. Kromě vlastních konstrukčních postupů jsou v disertaci sledovány i jiné důležité okolnosti vzniku hliněných staveb, například příprava materiálu. Výsledkem je například exkurz do dobové sociální struktury venkovské společnosti a specifikováním vybraných profesních skupin zabývajících se těžbou, zpracováním a výrobou stavebních prvků. Na základě výzkumu jsem doplnil některé informace o specifické skupině venkovských zedníků – válkařů – kteří se kromě jiného specializovali na stavbu válkových objektů. Tito všestranní řemeslníci pravidla ovládali několik profesí a v odborné literatuře bývají souhrnně označováni jako tzv. náturisté. Ve výčtu tradičních stavebních materiálů nechybí v práci ani pojednání o použití kamene jako dalšího důležitého stavebního materiálu na hanáckém venkově. Přiblížena je geologická skladba podloží, druhy hornin a jejich použití v konstrukci venkovských staveb. Závěrečná pasáž je zaměřena na možností budoucího výzkumu hliněné architektury. Jako jeden z možných prostředků obnovy a zachování tradičních stavebních postupů se jeví experiment postavený na vědeckém základě, ke kterému by měly být v prvé řadě položeny teoretické základy v rámci aplikované neboli experimentální etnologie.

Abstract:

The dissertation studies wall construction of rural dwellings in the ethnographical region of Haná, central Moravia. Geographically speaking, this building technology can be found in the northern part of the region. This area is marked by the occurrence of the Panonnian house type which has its centre in central Danube area. Unlike most previous works on traditional building, I focused primarily on the material and construction of the load-bearing walls with the emphasis on clay building. The methodology corresponds with the historical conception of the ethnological studies. I compared a large number of different resources including literature and field research data. In the introductory part I compare the archeological records from Moravia and neighboring areas which document the use of clay in load-bearing wall construction. The information is put into the context of ethnological analogies. I started the analysis of recent documents from the most basic forms of buildings - the subterranean constructions. Their building in this region has a long tradition thanks to suitable subsoil. The subterranean rooms were used primarily for farming and defense purposes, sporadically were they used also as provisional dwellings. The chapters on different aspects of clay building in Haná are preceded by an account of the use of wood, which played a dominant role in the local building tradition as the principal building material probably until the close of the early modern period. Many archaic building technologies related to wood were preserved in the rural area of Haná; however, they ceased to be used already in the second half of the 19th century. The likely reasons which led to the decline in the use of wood as the main building material are presented. The main subject of the dissertation is the extinct tradition of clay building in Haná. During my field research I discovered a technology which had not been described in this region before - the so called rammed earth. It was found in the utility room of a probably late medieval building. The principle of this simple and at the same time oldest building technology lies in stacking formless homogenized mixture of earth and straw and forming rammed walls. The greatest attention was paid to building technologies which employ lumps - “války”. The term “válek” stands for differently shaped components made of earth and straw; the term has undergone a meaning shift on the geographical level. In the northern part of the region it designated an independent structural element used for building the load-bearing walls while in the south it described an archaic form of a complementary – that implies non-bearing – component used in the construction of wooden walls or horizontal constructions. However, the same term meant an artificial bank in sense of a flood levee. From the point of view of etymology, Václav Machek’s definition of the term “válek” is widely accepted today. According to him, the term is derived from the verb “váleti”, which describes the method of forming the individual lumps. Another interpretation takes into account the possibility that originally the term designated the structural components of “val” (fortification). The term “válek” as a name for a structural component can be found in other Slavic countries, especially among eastern Slavs. The use of dried components gradually became dominant in clay building. Even today structural components moulded by hand and bound by mortar can be found in the field. The most characteristic elements of clay building in the studied area were unburnt bricks, which were used probably since the end of the 18th century. The fact that the burnt bricks gradually replaced the previous building technologies might have been caused by the limitations that the above mentioned archaic building techniques imposed on the increasing construction requirements. variability of the construction designs. This material was used in Hána up to the half of the 20th century. Different construction types of stacked earth buildings in the area of Haná, their visual resemblance to some types of stone masonry and their relations to other techniques using unburnt clay are thoroughly examined in the text. Originally, the shapes of individual components of the masonry were rather random. Later on were they shaped more precisely and built up according to unified patterns. The best known are, thanks to the amount of recent evidence from central Moravia, buildings with so called herringbone walling. Some authors relate this kind of binding to one of the basic building techniques of antiquity known by an inaccurate name opus spicatum. This chapter also analyses a so far unknown structure of triangular moulds which I discovered during my field research. Apart from the construction techniques, other important procedures are described in the study, e.g. preparation of the material, social structure of the rural society and specification of selected occupational groups engaged in the extraction and processing of the material and production of the building components. On the basis of field research I added some information on the specific group of rural bricklayers – the so called “válkaři” – who specialized in constructing hand-moulded mud-lump buildings. These craftsmen usually mastered several professions. Another important building material typical for Haná which is mentioned in the dissertation is stone. The geological subsoil, types of rocks and minerals and their use in rural building constructions are described. The concluding part focuses on the future of clay building research. The restoration and preservation of traditional building technologies can be based on experimental research with scientific foundations; the theoretical groundwork should be laid by the applied or experimental ethnology.
