The Perception of Infant Crying

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem studie bylo zjistit, zda je vnímání kojeneckého pláče ovlivněno psychologickými charakteristikami matky. Data od 310 žen byla získána během jejich těhotenství a po narození dítěte. Informace o charakteristikách matek byly získány ze sebeposuzovacích dotazníků (STAI-T, BDI-II, MSRI-s, IRA) během prvního sběru dat (ve třetím trimestru těhotenství). Data o kojeneckém pláči byla získána během druhého sběru dat (mezi 4. a 8. týdnem po porodu). Do druhé vlny sběru dat byla zařazena i původní metoda Videodotazník kojeneckého pláče. Metoda je inspirována dotazníkem Zeifmanové (2003). Respondentky byly požádány, aby po zhlédnutí videonahrávky pláče neznámého kojence uvedly (na sedmibodové Likertově škále) míru souhlasu/nesouhlasu s adjektivy popisujícími kojenecký pláč a se substantivy popisujícími jejich emocionální odezvu na kojenecký pláč. Byly nalezeny vztahy mezi charakteristikami matek a jejich vnímáním a emocionální odezvou na kojenecký pláč.

Abstract:

The main research objective of the study was to determine whether the perception of infant crying is influenced by psychological characteristics of the mother. The data on 310 women were collected during their pregnancy and after delivery. Maternal psychological characteristics were obtained from self-report questionnaires (STAI-T, BDI-II, MSRI-s, IRA) during the first data collection (in the third trimester of pregnancy). The data about infant’s crying behaviour were obtained during the second data collection (between 4th and 8th week after delivery). The second data collection also included the original questionnaire Feelings about Infant Crying and Infant Crying Characteristics. The questionnaire is inspired by Zeifman’s study (2003). Respondents were asked to see a videoclip of an unknown crying infant and then to rate (on 7-point Likert scale) their agreement/disagreement with adjectives describing the infant’s crying behaviour and with nouns describing their feelings about the behaviour. The relationships between maternal characteristics and their perception of infant crying and emotional response to it were found.
