Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá vzděláváním původních obyvatel dvou kontinentů, Ameriky a Austrálie, ve 20. století. Vzdělávání v internátních školách bylo hlavním prostředkem procesu přizpůsobení se života původních obyvatel do společnosti bílých kolonizátorů. V internátních školách však nebyl kladen hlavní důraz na vzdělávání, ale na to, aby byly děti zbaveny jejich domorodé a kulturní identity. V práci je krátce představena historie života původní národů na obou kontinentech před jejich kolonizací. Dále jsou popsány jak fyzické, tak psychologické způsoby, které měly děti ve školách postupně zbavit jejich identity. Součástí práce jsou i svědectví těch, kteří internátní školy navštěvovali. Práce si klade za cíl představit a porovnat průběh začleňování původních obyvatel do společnosti kolonizátorů skrze vzdělávání, které se dělo v zemi, kde oni sami žili tisíce let v míru a harmonii s přírodou. Děti byly odebrány ze svého přirozeného prostředí a byly poslány do škol stavěných daleko od rezervací. Ztratily kontakt nejen se svojí rodinou, ale nezažily ani způsob života a výchovy, který žili jejich předkové. Proto se k němu ani nemohly po ukončení vzdělávání vrátit. Stejně tak nebyly schopné komunikovat v řeči jejich kmenu. Nedostatek lásky a kruté chování těch, kteří je měli vyučovat a opatrovat, zapříčinilo, že mnozí z nich zůstali osamocení a zničení. Tato práce shrnuje a porovnává proces začleňování původních obyvatel do života současných obyvatel Ameriky a Austrálie, které se uskutečňovalo skrze vzdělávání v internátních školách. Ale svědectví těch, kteří vzdělávání v těchto institucích zažili, ukazuje, že tento plán pro asimilaci nebyl úspěšný. Nicméně, cena, která byla za tento pokus zaplacena – zničené životy mnoha lidí – byla příliš vysoká.

Abstract:

This Bachelor’s Diploma Thesis is dedicated to the education of First Nations in America and in Australia in the twentieth century. Education at boarding schools was the key step in the process of assimilation of First Nations into white societies. Boarding schools did not lay as much stress on education itself as it did on depriving children of their native and cultural identity. The thesis introduces the historical background of life of First Nations on both continents before colonization. It also describes the physical and psychological level of deprivation of the students’ identity. Testimonies of those who attended boarding schools are provided. The main aim of this thesis is to compare the process of assimilation of the First Nations into the white settlers’ society through education, in a land where they previously lived for thousands of years in peace and harmony. Children were removed from their natural environment into schools that were built far from their homes, they lost touch not only with their families but also with the life they used to live. They were not able to return to that after finishing the schools as they could not communicate in their tribal language. The lack of love and the harsh behaviour from their caretakers left many of them alone and broken. This thesis is a document that, in conclusion, presents the issue of the process of assimilation of First Nations in America and Australia through education. Testimonies of those who experienced boarding schools leaves proof that the plan of assimilation did not work; however, the price paid for it – of many destroyed lives – was too high.
