Comics Between Two Cultural Environments: Analysis of the Genre and Options for Translation

Abstract:

The thesis is focused on the specifics of comic translation. The section of the thesis which concentrates on such features is preceeded by an introduction into the comic genre, commenting on its characteristic features and types of comics, its rise and development throughout the world, namely in The United States and in Europe. A separate chapter is devoted to the development and specific charakter of Czech comic writing. What follows are chapters targeted at translation theory and – following it - practical analysis of three comic titles and their Czech translations. Taking the results of the analytical process into consideration, a conclusion is drawn which reveals the specific features of comic translation encountered in the corpus.
