Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je zaměření se na společenské role žen v knize Probuzení od autorky Kate Chopin. První část diplomové práce pojednává o historických faktech v 19.století, především však diskutuje vliv Viktoriánské společnosti v Severní Americe a snažení amerických žen dosáhnout ke konci 19. století emancipace. Další část se věnuje ženským představitelkám v knize Probuzení a s nimi spojeným hlavním tématům, která se v knize vyskytují, jako například společenské postavení, mateřství, manželství, ženství a sexualita, které odrážejí aspekty Viktoriánského rozdělení společnosti podle pohlaví. Dále pak třetí kapitola se zaměřuje na hlavní hrdinku Ednu Pontellierovou, kterou Chopin postavila do role ženy, která se postupně distancuje od společenských konvencí, které ji jsou od narození vštěpována. Takto se v průběhu svého příběhu snaží nalézt svou pravou identitu, umělecké vyjádření a s tím spojenou finanční nezávislost, ale také naplnění svých vášní, které s manželstvím vymizely. Nicméně, Ednina sebe-realizace a nekonformita je v rozporu s konvencí Viktoriánské společnosti v daném století, jejíž zásady jsou v závěru mnohem vlivnější než ženská individualita a odhodlání změnit postavení ženy devatenáctého století.

Abstract:

The aim of the diploma thesis is to focus on the female social roles in Kate Chopin´s The Awakening. The first part of the thesis discusses the historical facts and background of the nineteenth century, especially it is concerned with the influence of Victorian society in North America and a women´s struggle for emancipation at the end of the nineteenth century. The next part is devoted to female characters in The Awakening along with the main themes related to them such as social status, motherhood, marriage, womanhood and sexuality which reflect the aspects of the Victorian social and gender division. Furthermore the third chapter concentrates on the heroine Edna Pontellier to whom Chopin gave a role of a woman who alienates herself from social conventions which have been instilled to her. Thus in the course of her story she attempts to discover her identity, artistic expression and related to it is financial independence as well as fulfilment of her desires which have disappeared after her marriage. However, Edna´s self-realization and non-conformity is in contradiction with the conventions of the Victorian society whose norms are eventually more influential than female individuality and determination to change the position of a nineteenth-century woman.
