Canadian Participation in the Security Transatlantic Link after 1989: Canada’s Role in the Operations and the Activities of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis „Canadian participation in the security transatlantic link after 1989: Canada’s role in the operations and the activities of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation” discusses the status of Canada in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation after 1989 through Canadian troops contribution into NATO operations, Canadian military expenditures and Canadian armed forces strength. A theoretical foundation of this paper is a concept of middle power. The aim of this thesis is to provide a historical overview of Canadian foreign and security policy, to execute an empirical analysis of a research statement - Canada according its foreign and security policy after 1989 does not have a status of a middle power, and then to evaluate the status of Canada in the NATO. The research statement was not rejected nor validated. However, the author notes that Canada has never had a status of a great power in the NATO according to selected variables. The status of Canada can be described the best as a middle power or in certain cases as a minor power.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca „Kanadská participácia na bezpečnostnej transatlantickej väzbe po roku 1989: Rola Kanady v operáciách a pôsobení Severoatlantickej aliancie“ sa zaoberá pozíciou Kanady v Severoatlantickej aliancii po roku 1989 z perspektívy kanadských príspevkov do vybraných operácií NATO, veľkosti obranných výdajov Kanady a veľkosti ozbrojených síl Kanady. Ako teoretické východisko pre analýzu slúži koncept strednej mocnosti, middle power. Cieľom práce je podať historický prehľad kanadskej zahraničnej a bezpečnostnej politiky, uskutočniť empirickú analýzu výskumného tvrdenia - Kanada svojou zahraničnou a bezpečnostnou politikou v Severoatlantickej aliancii po roku 1989 nezastáva pozíciu strednej mocnosti, a následne zhodnotiť postavenie Kanady v NATO. Autorovi sa výskumné tvrdenie nepodarilo jednoznačne zamietnuť ani potvrdiť, ale konštatuje, že Kanada nikdy nezastávala postavenie veľmoci v NATO na základe zvolených premenných. Pozíciu Kanady v NATO dobre vystihuje označenie stredná mocnosť, alebo v niektorých prípadoch malý štát.
