Misconceptions of grammer students about basic genetic concepts and their attitudes to genetics

Abstract:

Znát miskoncepce, které žáci a studenti mají, je prvním předpokladem pro práci s nimi. Mezi moderní a rychle se rozvíjející vědní obory dnešní doby patří genetika. Poznatky z tohoto oboru pomáhají zlepšovat a zkvalitňovat lékařskou péči, uplatňují se v zemědělství a mnoha dalších oblastech lidského života. Vychovávat budoucí vědce a další pracovníky, kteří se uplatní v tomto oboru a budou jej dále posouvat, je významný úkol. Ovšem genetika je pro žáky a studenty především kvůli své abstraktnosti obtížné téma, proto zde hrozí vznik miskoncepcí ještě více nežli v jiných oblastech. Problematické je nejen pochopení jednotlivých genetických pojmů, ale především jejich vzájemné propojování a chápání genetiky jako celku. Významným faktorem, který se uplatňuje při vzdělávání, jsou postoje. Ty ovlivňují motivaci a přístup k učení. Tato studie se proto zaměřuje nejen na hledání konkrétních miskoncepcí u základních genetických pojmů (alela, DNA, gen a chromozom), ale i na postoje, které žáci a studenti ke genetice zaujímají. Dále se práce snaží prozkoumat vztah mezi miskoncepcemi a postoji. Ověřován je i vliv nezávislých proměnných na zkoumané oblasti. V práci je možné naleznout vymezení, charakteristiku a širší zázemí základních pojmů (především miskoncepce a postoje). Obsažena je i rešerše současného stavu poznání ve zkoumané oblasti.

Abstract:

The first requirement for work with the misconceptions is to understand which ones the students have. Genetics is a modern and fast-developing science. The knowledge of this field helps to improve health care; it is used in agriculture and many other areas of human life. It is therefore an important goal to educate future scientists and other employees who will use and develop the field of genetics. However, since it is a difficult topic for the students, mainly because it is abstract, the misconceptions are more probable than in other branches. Students find difficult not only the individual notions but mainly their relationship and understanding in broader sense. Attitudes are significant factor in education as they influence the motivation. As a result, the thesis focuses not only on the identification of specific misconceptions in genetic notions (allele, DNA, gene, chromosome) but also on students’ attitudes towards genetics. Moreover, the thesis examines the relation between the misconceptions and the attitudes. The influence of independent variables on the research filed is considered as well. It also defines basic terminology (mainly misconceptions and attitudes) and presents research of the current state of knowledge and research in the given field.
