The Russian Occultism at the Turn of the 19th and 20th Centuries

Abstract:

In the present thesis entitled The Russian Occultism at the Turn of the 19th and 20th Centuries, the development and history of Freemasonry in Russia is described. We have primarily tried to illuminate and explain the origin of Freemasonry, from where this ideological stream came to Russia and which personalities took care of its spreading and promotion. In the subchapter on Masonic conspiracy, attention is devoted to the participation of Freemasons in overthrowing of the Tsar Nicholas II from the throne. The next chapter contains a brief account and the characteristics of occult and esoteric societies that were formed in Russia at the turn of 19th and 20th centuries. The given bachelor thesis, besides the Masonry topic, deals with the connection of science with occult elements and their subsequent use in serious scientific research which was carried out under the supervision of state authorities, interested in the results of these researches. Three main scientists-parapsychologists such as Gleb Bokii, Alexander Barchenko and Vladimir Bekhterev were mentioned. First of all, a brief description of their lives was given and then followed the information on what kind of research was performed by them and what results they achieved. In the fourth chapter I write about important personalities of the Russian artistic milieu. The subchapter is devoted to Nicholas Roerich, the Russian artist and painter, whose fascination with occultism and mystery is reflected in his paintings and later (after the turn of events) became a special agent of the international recognition of the USSR. The following two subchapters on Valery Bryusov, Andrei Bely and anthroposophists also relate to the interaction between art and the occult, however, our goal was to describe the influence of the occult on literary society at that time, the so-called Silver Age of Russian Culture. In the last chapter dedicated to Helena Blavatsky, the significant philosopher and founder of the theosophical teachings, an attempt has been made to explain the origin, content of her thought and its spreading not only throughout Russia, but all over the world.

Abstract:

Ve své bakalářské práci, jejíž název je Ruský okultismus na přelomu 19. a 20. století, popisuji hlavně vývoj a historii svobodného zednářství v Rusku. Především jsem se snažil popsat a vysvětlit původ zednářství, odkud tento ideový proud dorazil do Ruska a také, které významné osobnosti se postaraly o jeho šíření a propagaci. V podkapitole o zednářském spiknutí se věnuji účasti zednářů na sesazení cara Mikuláše II. z trůnu. Další kapitola obsahuje stručný výčet a charakteristiku okultních a esoterických spolků, které se formovaly v Rusku na přelomu 19. a 20. století. V rámci této bakalářské práce se však kromě zednářů věnuji také propojení vědy s okultními prvky a jejich následném využití v seriozním vědeckém bádání, ktere se provádělo pod dohledem státních orgánů, které měly zájem o výsledky těchto výzkumů. Zmiňuji tady tři hlavní postavy vědců-parapsychologů, jsou to: Gleb Bokij, Alexandr Barčenko a Vladimír Bechtěrev. Nejdříve je u každého stručný popis jejich života a potom, jaké výzkumy prováděli a jakých výsledků docílili. Ve čtvrté kapitole píši o významných osobnostech uměleckého prostředí v Rusku. V podkapitole zasvěcené Mikuláši Roerichovy, ruskému umělci a malíři, jehož fascinace okultizmem a tajemnem se odrazila v jeho malbách, jenž se později zvláštním vývojem událostí stane zprostředkovatelem mezinárodního uznání SSSR. Následující dvě podkapitoly o Valeriji Brjusovovi, Andreji Bělém a Antroposofech se také týkají propojení umění a okultismu, avšak snažím se zde vystihnout jeho vliv na tehdejší literární společnost tzv. stříbrného věku v Rusku. V poslední kapitole věnované Jeleně Blavatské významné filosofce a zakladatelce Teosofického učení, se snažím vysvětlit původ, obsah učení a jeho šíření nejen po Rusku.
