The Phenomenon of the Looking and the Flâneur in Gustave Caillebotte's Painting

Abstract:

Předmětem této bakalářské práce je analýza fenoménu pozorování ulice a figury flanéra v malbě francouzského umělce Gustava Caillebotta. Ve středu pozornosti bakalářské práce je tedy otázka zobrazené percepce života velkoměsta v umění druhé poloviny 19. století. První část práce bude věnována umělci samotnému, jeho osobnosti, kulturnímu, historickému a sociálnímu kontextu doby a proměnám města v rámci Haussmannovy přestavby Paříže. Kapitola této části práce obrací pozornost také na impresionismus a představitele tohoto stylu, což ve značné míře ovlivnilo tvorbu Gustava Caillebotta. Druhá část práce se bude převážně zabývat popisem a analýzou vybraných uměleckých děl Gustava Caillebotta s tematikou pozorování ulice a města. Předmětem analýzy bude propojení člověka a města skrze percepci, charakteristika hlavních postav pařížské společnosti a nového způsobu trávení volného času. Taktéž bude v práci nastíněn motiv pozorovatele - ženy, nové postupy v umění a vliv fotografie na malířství tohoto období. Poslední kapitola přiblíží feno-mén flanéra v umění, vývoj motivu a vybraná díla v Caillebottově malířské tvorbě. Cílem bakalářské práce je na základě studia uměleckých děl a života umělce vystihnout, jakým způsobem francouzská společnost konce 19. století vnímala fenomén pozorování a flanéra. Bakalářská práce vychází nejen z tvorby Gustava Caillebotta, ale také z teoretických vědeckých textů, historických a kulturních studií.

Abstract:

The subject of this bachelor's thesis is the analysis of the phenomenon of street ob-servation and the figure of the flâneur in the paintings of French artist Gustave Cail-lebotte. At the centre of attention of the bachelor's thesis is the characterization of the phenomenon of street observation, thus addressing questions concerning the de-piction of urban life in the art of the second half of the 19th century. The first part of the thesis will focus on the artist himself, his life, cultural, historical, and social con-text of the time, and the changes in the city within the framework of the Haussmann reconstruction of Paris. This part also turns attention to Impressionism and representatives of this style, which significantly influenced Gustave Caillebotte's work. The second part of the thesis will mainly deal with describing and analysing selected artworks by Gustave Caillebotte with themes of street and city observation. The analysis will focus on the connection between the individual and the city through the observation characterization of the main figures of Parisian society, and new ways of spending leisure time. Additionally, the thesis will outline the motif of the observer - women, new techniques in art, and the influence of photography on painting during this period. The final chapter will explore the phenomenon of the flâneur in art, the development of the motif, and selected works that exemplify the motif in Caillebotte's artistic creation. The aim of the bachelor's thesis is to grasp, based on the study of artistic works and the artist's life, how French society per-ceived the phenomenon of observation and the flâneur at the end of the 19th century. The bachelor's thesis draws on the work of Gustave Caillebotte, as well as on theoretical scientific texts, historical, and cultural studies.
