The language choices of trilingual children raised in trans-national families

Abstract:

The present thesis is about language acquisition in context of trilinualism. It focuses on the language choices in children who grow up with three languages, which are Czech, Arabic, and English. The aim of the study is to find out how and what language the trilingual children choose. Case study had been chosen as a method of qualitative approach. Data collection includes semi-structured interview, demographic data questionnaire, audio recordings, observation, and written notes. The participants are transnational families from middle and upper middle class living in the Middle East. The study revealed that trilingual children's language choices are mainly influenced by parents' communication strategies based on their linguistic background. Moreover, various socio-cultural factors such as extended families, community, individual's attitudes, motivation, and many other factors affect children's language choices as well.

Abstract:

Tato práce se se zabývá osvojováním jazyků v kontextu trilingvismu. Práce je zaměřena na volbu jazyků u dětí, které vyrůstají v tříjazyčném prostředí a osvojují si češtinu, arabštinu a angličtinu. Cílem práce je zjisit, jak a který jazyk si tříjazyčné děti volí. Výzkumnou metodou je případová studie. Techniky sběru údajů zahrnují pohovor s polootevřenými otázkami, demografický dotazník, audionahrávky, pozorování a psané poznámky. Bylo zjištěno, že volba jazyka u u tříjazyčných dětí významně ovlivňují komunikační strategie rodičů, které závisí na tom, jakými jazyky rodiče mluví. Volbu jazyka tříjazyčných dětí je navíc ovlivňují sociokulturní faktory, a to širší rodina, společnost, osobní postoje, motivace a mnoho dalších.
