Anaximander. New approaches in an effort to deepen, refine and disambiguate our current knowledge.

Abstract:

Pole zkoumání Anaximandra se zdá být takřka vyčerpané. Objevit po více než století zkoumání omezeného a neměnícího se textového materiálu něco nového, zpravidla znamená uchýlit se do oblasti spekulací. Přesto tato práce přichází s řadou nových objevů. Opouští totiž dosud převládající schéma „interpretace- konzistence – systém“ a přináší do oboru metody moderní lingvistiky a poznatky mnoha dalších vědních disciplin. Práce přistupuje k anaximandrovské problematice s nástroji korpusové lingvistiky, textové syntaxe, teorie valence. Zdokonaluje metodu paralelních sloupců a významně zapojuje klasickou filologii. Zpracovává nejnovější poznatky z archeologie mílétské a kárské oblasti, objasňuje tisíce let staré texty prostřednictvím nedávných objevů z oblasti meteorologie Egejského moře nebo prostřednictvím moderní zoologie a etologie lokálních druhů. Šest studií (tři čistě jazykovědné, tři multioborové) ukazuje, jak původ filozofie souvisí s národem Kárů a mílétskou mořeplavbou, jak mílétští filozofové čerpali inspiraci ke svým přirovnáním z hlavních oblastí mílétského hospodářství, jak naše chápání zlomku A9/1 a biologických zlomků může být zpřesněno postupy moderní lingvistiky a jak dokážeme spolehlivě určit význam temných výrazů metabiónai a préstéros aulos, využijeme-li exaktní vědu.

Abstract:

The field of the Anaximander studies seems to be nearly exhausted. After more than a century of examination of the limited and unchanging textual material, the new discoveries are mostly reduced to the sphere of speculation. This thesis produces a plenty of new discoveries, though. For it leaves the prevalent scheme “interpretation – consistency – system” and introduces modern linguistic methods and findings from many other sciences into our discipline. The thesis approaches the issues in Anaximander with tools of corpus linguistics, textual syntax, theory of valence. It improves the method of parallel columns and widely employs procedures of classical philology. It handles the latest findings in archaeology of the Milesian and Carian area, elucidates thousands-year-old texts by recent discoveries in the field of Aegean Sea meteorology or by modern zoology and ethology of local species. Six studies (three purely linguistic, three multidisciplinary) show how the origin of philosophy is connected with the Carian nation and Milesian seafaring, how the Milesian philosophers draw inspiration for their similes from the main areas of Milesian business, how our understanding of the fragment A9/1 and the biological fragments can be refined by means of modern linguistics, and how we can reliably determine the meaning of the obscure expressions metabionai and presteros aulos, using exact science.
