Crime rate analysis using methods of spatial econometrics

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je zjistit pomoсí metod prostorové ekonometrie, které socio-ekonomické a demografické faktory ovlivňují míru kriminality v České republice. Analýza byla provedena pro 77 okresů České republiky za období 2005-2018. Pomocí testů založených na Moranovém a Gearyho indexu potvrzujeme prostorovou autokorelaci míry kriminality. Dále byly sestaveny o odhadovány prostorové modely SAR, SEM a SDM s fixními efekty. Byla provedena analýza stability odhadů modelů SAR a SEM vůči změně specifikace matice vah. Na základě analýzy bylo zjištěno, že faktory ovlivňující míru kriminality jsou počet objasněných trestných činů, poměr cizinců, věkové a pohlavní rozložení, nerovnost příjmů, HDP na obyvatele, počet uživatelů drog a míra nezaměstnanosti. Vysvětlující proměnná, která vyjadřuje míru vzdělanosti, se však prokázala jako statisticky nevýznamná.

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to find out which socio-economic and demographic factors influence the crime rate in the Czech Republic using spatial econometrics methods. The analysis was performed for 77 districts of the Czech Republic for the period 2005-2018. Using tests based on the Moran and Geary indexes, we confirm the spatial autocorrelation of the crime rate. Also, spatial models SAR, SEM and SDM with fixed effects were constructed and evaluated. An analysis of the stability of SAR and SEM model estimates against the change in the weight matrix specification was performed. Based on the analysis, it was found that the factors influencing the crime rate are the number of solved crimes, the ratio of foreigners, age and gender distribution, income inequality, GDP per capita, the number of drug users and the unemployment rate. However, the explanatory variable, which expresses the level of education, proved to be statistically insignificant.
