Language and Theory of Knowledge in the Thinking of Walter Burley

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce se pokouší o rekonstrukci a analýzu jádra logických teorií pozdně středověkého filosofa Waltera Burleyho (cca 1275 - cca 1344), které je určeno jeho tezí, že hlavním cílem logických zkoumání má být jasné rozlišení pravdy od nepravdy. V ústředí logiky jakožto vědy tedy musí stát teorie pravdy. Teorie pravdy je ovšem konstruována takovým způsobem, že předpokládá další logické a epistemologické teorie, které jsou tudíž v této práci rovněž analyzovány. Jedná se především o Burleyho teorii vlastností termínů - signifikaci (o jejíž reinterpretaci se tato disertace rovněž snaží), supozici a spojení (copulatio). Jelikož pak pravda v logickém smyslu souvisí s větnými celky, především pak s propozicemi (propositiones), nabízí tato práce také interpretaci Burleyho propoziční sémantiky, v jejímž ústředí se nachází kontroverzní koncept existence tzv. reálných propozic (propositio in re), v nichž úlohu termínů plní intelektem uchopené reálné věci. Jak se práce snaží prokázat, tyto propozice plní velmi důležitou funkci v Burleyho teorii pravdy. Poslední kapitola pak nabízí interpretaci dvou centrálních aspektů Burleyho epistemologie a psychologie - teorii vzniku pojmů a jejich reprezentační funkce, přičemž ukazuje, že Burley tuto funkci zakládal na třech principech - podobnosti (similitudo), signifikaci a kauzalitě.

Abstract:

This dissertation attempts to reconstruct and analyze the core of logical theories of late medieval philosopher and theologian Walter Burley (ca. 1275 - ca. 1344) which is determined by his claim that the main goal of logical investigations is to clearly distinguish truth from falsehood. Therefore, the theory of truth must be in the center of logic as a science. However, the theory of truth is constructed in such a way that it assumes other logical and epistemological theories which are, therefore, analyzed in this work as well. It deals with Burley's theory of the properties of terms - signification (whose reinterpretation the dissertation also offers), supposition theory and his notion of copulation (copulatio). Since the truth in a logical sense is related to propositions (i.e. declarative sentences), this thesis also offers an interpretation of Burley's propositional semantics, at the center of which is the controversial concept of so-called "real propositions" (propositio in re), which are, according to Burley, composed out of the real things grasped by the intellect. As the thesis strives to prove, these propositions fulfill very important function in both versions of Burley's theory of truth. The last chapter offers an interpretation of two central aspects of Burley's epistemology and psychology - the theory of formation of concepts and theory of their representational function, proving that Burley bases this function on three principles - likeness (similitudo), signification, and causality.
