Blaxploitation Movies as Unique Hollywood Genre of the 70s

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá žánrovou svébytností hollywoodských blaxploitation filmů. Blaxploitation snímky jsou nahlíženy jako vykalkulované produkce hollywoodských studií v dob ekonomické krize studiového systému v Americe na přelomu 60. a 70. let. Filmy přímo zacílené na menšinovou diváckou skupinu černých Američanů se stávají v této době záchranou pro hollywoodská studia a současně představují jistý posun ve vyobrazování afroamerické menšiny ve filmu. Dříve zavedené stereotypy (archetypy postav jako například chůva, černý samec, tragický mulat, atd.) jsou na konci 60. let nahrazovány novými, současnjšími postavami. Na plátnech kin se objevují typy postav, se kterými má afroamerický divák možnost ztotožnit se. Většinou jednostranné typy postav určované jedním charakteristickým rysem jsou vystřídány postavou neohroženého a sebevědomého Afroameričana hájícího spravedlnost a bojujícího proti zlé (tj. bílé) společnosti. Přesto, že se může zdát, že blaxploitation filmy pouze variují již existující žánrové konvence bělošských žánrů, vytvořily tyto snímky svébytný a samostatný žánr, z nějž čerpají i současní tvůrci. Práce se soustředí jak na zmíněný posun v typologii afroamerických postav, tak na žánrové konvence vycházející z teorie Ricka Altmana.

Abstract:

The emergence of the blaxploitation genre and its consecutive boom came out from the sociological, political and last but not least demographical shifts within the American society in the late 60s and early 70s. Afro-American cinema-goers were no longer satisfied with the prevailing clichés (often symbolised by the well-bred characters played by Sidney Poitier) that dominated the depiction of black Americans on the screen. Sweet Sweetbacks Baad Asssss Song brought the desired modification and its success inspired not only other Afro-American filmmakers but also Hollywood bosses, who suddenly saw films aimed at black audiences as an effective solution to the existent financial crisis. The success of studio-produced Shaft and Superfly confirmed the assumption of the profit of such films and started a rapid production of movies with dominant black characters. The active, strong and sexually potent black male can nevertheless be seen as a variation of the early stereotype of a brutal black male (notoriously known from Griffiths The Birth of a Nation). With the outburst of black super-women we can trace the parallels with male heroes. The decline of the blaxploitation genre was almost as quick as its emergence and came with the so-called "movie brats", but we were left with tens of more or less disparate films to examine. The blaxploitation films profited from the horror genre (Blacula) as well as the musical (The Wiz) or martial arts films (Black Eliminator). Along with the outline of the character and genre typology, I would like to address the problem of advertising methods such as trailers and posters which emphasised the "new" black heroes.
