František Xaver Margold and documentation of medieval monuments in the years 1911-1945

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá činností Františka Xavera Margolda na průzkumech historických staveb. F. X. Margold (1887-1967) působil od roku 1911 jako asistent architekta Kamila Hilberta při dostavbě katedrály sv. Víta na Pražském hradě a dokumentoval také další stavby, jejichž opravy a adaptace byly svěřeny Kamilu Hilbertovi. V roce 1930 se Margold stal zaměstnancem Státního fotoměřického ústavu, pro který do roku 1935 zaměřoval stavební památky na území Čech. V letech 1935-1945 vedl výzkum Karolina, který předcházel opravám a adaptaci této univerzitní budovy. V důsledku špatných pracovních podmínek odešel Margold z výzkumu Karolina před jeho dokončením a do průběhu poválečné přestavby již nezasahoval. Cílem předkládané diplomové práce je nastínit okolnosti provádění výzkumů historických staveb a přiblížit tak stav ochrany památek ve vymezeném období 1911-1945. Vzhledem k existenci unikátních a velmi podrobných archivních záznamů z výzkumů Karolina je dokumentace historických staveb ve vybraném období detailněji přiblížena na této konkrétní památce. Současně jsou také obecně nastíněny dobové způsoby dokumentace staveb a náplň činnosti hlavních institucí zabývajících se ochranou památek. Do koncepce práce byla zařazena kapitola zaměřená na kamenickou práci a restaurování kamene, neboť se jedná o problematiku, které Margold jako znalec gotické architektury s mnohaletými praktickými zkušenostmi věnoval značnou pozornost.

Abstract:

The introduced diploma thesis deals with the description of activities of František Xaver Margold in historic buildings researches. F. X. Margold (1887 - 1967) worked since 1911 as an assistant to architect Kamil Hilbert during the completion of the St. Vitus Cathedral and also documented other constructions, whose repairs and adaptations were entrusted to Kamil Hilbert. In 1930 he became an employee of the State Photometry Institut, for which he measured architectural monuments in Bohemia in 1935. From 1935 to 1945 he conducted the research of Karolinum building, which preceded repairs and adaptation of this university building. As a result of poor working conditions, Margold left the Karolinum research before its completion and has not intervened during its post-war reconstruction any longer. The aim of this thesis is to present the circumstances of research conduct of historical buildings and so to describe the situation around heritage protection during 1911 ? 1945. Due to the existence of unique and highly detailed archival records of Karolinum research, the general documentation of historic buildings in this selected period is described on this particular sight. At the same time there are also generally outlined ways of building documentation during that period and activities of the main institutions involved in the protection of sights as well. The chapter focused on stone restoration work is included in the thesis because of significant Margolds? prior attention, which he gave to this issue as a gothic architecture expert with many years of practical experience.
