Dark tourism in the Czech Republic and it's potential with the focus on disaster tourism

Abstract:

Cíli této diplomové práce je analýza katastrofického turismu v České republice a zodpovězení hlavní výzkumné otázky: „Existuje v České republice potenciál k vytvoření produktu cestovního ruchu spojeného s katastrofickým turismem?“ a podpůrné výzkumné otázky: „Je na straně poptávky zájem o katastrofický turismus v České republice?“ Hlavní výzkumná otázka je zodpovězena kvalitativní metodou v podobě studia dokumentů obsahovou analýzou. Potenciál katastrofického turismu v České republice je spatřován především v souvislosti s důlním požárem na dole Marie v Březových Horách roku 1982, karvinským důlním neštěstím roku 1894, protržením přehrady na Bílé Desné roku 1916, boleveckou katastrofou z roku 1917, výbuchem na dole Nelson III roku 1934, požárem na Dole Dukla roku 1961 a pádu jugoslávského letadla u Srbské Kamenice roku 1972. K zodpovězení vedlejší výzkumné otázky slouží kvantitativní metoda v podobě standardizovaného dotazování, pomocí které bylo zjištěno, že 67 % respondentů nemá povědomí o fenoménu temného turismu, avšak zároveň má 64 % všech dotázaných zájem o návštěvu míst spojených se sedmi danými katastrofami z českého prostředí.

Abstract:

The goals of this master’s thesis are to analyze disaster tourism in the Czech Republic and answer the main research question: „Does the potential to create tourism product associated with disaster tourism exist in the Czech Republic?“ and the secondary research question: „Is there an interest in disaster tourism in the Czech Republic on the demand side?“ The main research question is answered by a qualitative method in the form of document and content analysis. The potential of disaster tourism in the Czech Republic is seen mainly in connection with the mine fire at the Marie mine in Březové Hory in 1982, the Karviná mining accident in 1894, the rupture of the dam in Bílá Desná in 1916, the Bolevec catastrophe in 1917, the explosion at the Nelson III mine in 1934 , the fire at the Mine Dukla in 1961 and the crash of a Yugoslavian airplane near Srbská Kamenice in 1972. To answer the secondary research question, a quantitative method in the form of a standardized survey is used. It was found that 67 % of the respondents had never heard about dark tourism, however 64 % of all respondents are interested in visiting places connected with the seven disasters which took place in the Czech territory.
