Limit Situations in Selected Works by Jan Balaban

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá motivy mezních situací ve vybraných dílech českého autora Jana Balabána. Zaměřuje se přitom na jeho ranou prozaickou tvorbu, a sice na povídkový soubor Středověk (1995), novelistickou prózu Boží lano (1998) a román s názvem Černý beran (2000). Při vlastní analýze jednotlivých motivů se práce opírá o koncepci mezních situací německého existencialistického filozofa Karla Jasperse, a zaměřuje se tak pouze na ty mezní situace, o nichž Jaspers hovoří ve svém filozofickém díle, tedy na utrpení, smrt, boj a vinu. Práce si klade za cíl potvrdit, zda se oba autoři – Jan Balabán a Karl Jaspers – shodují ve svém náhledu na mezní situace, a především pak uvedené mezní situace podrobně prozkoumat a porovnat.

Abstract:

The thesis explores the motifs of limit situations in selected works of the Czech author Jan Balabán. It focuses on his early prose works, namely the short story collection Středověk (1995), the novelistic prose Boží lano (1998) and the novel Černý beran (2000). In the analysis of the individual motifs, the thesis builds upon the concept of limit situations of the German existentialist Karl Jaspers, and thus focuses only on those that Jaspers explaines in his philosophical work: suffering, death, fight and guilt. The thesis aims to confirm whether are the authors – Jan Balabán and Karl Jaspers – in agreement of their views of critical stages and, above all, to examine these stages in detail and compare them.
