Academic motivation in relation to self variables in Masaryk University students

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá výzkumem akademické motivace, v souvislosti s vnímanou autonomií, jasností sebepojetí a sebehodnocením člověka. Data (N = 1060) byla nasbírána v rámci longitudinální studie Na cestě studiem, která probíhá pod záštitou Masarykovy univerzity. Měřili jsme typy motivace pomocí sebedeterminační teorie a předpokládali, že budou mít vztah k ostatním zkoumaným proměnným. Zjistili jsme, že studenti jsou motivováni více vnější motivací M = 5,19; SD = 0,99, vnitřní motivace dosahuje průměru M = 4,4; SD = 1,08 a amotivace M = 2,18, SD = 1,3. Byly nalezeny rozdíly mezi pohlavími a sice u vnější motivace, kde ženy měly v průměru vyšší vnější motivaci než muži. Další rozdíly byly nalezeny u vnitřní motivace něčeho dosáhnout, vnější identifikované a vnější introjikované motivace, ve všech zmíněných měly ženy vyšší průměr než muži. Dále bylo potvrzeno, že vyšší míra vnímané autonomie je spojena s vyšší mírou jasnosti sebepojetí (r = .338, R2 = 0,114), jasnost sebepojetí také pozitivně koreluje se self-esteemem (r = .41, R2 = 0,171). Pomocí regresních modelů bylo zjišťováno, zda na základě self-esteemu, vnímané autonomie a jasnosti sebepojetí dokážeme predikovat typ motivace. Vnitřní motivace byla pomocí modelu vysvětlena pouze z 6,6 %, vnější motivace jen z 0,8 % a amotivace z 8 %. Vypadá to, že naše nezávislé proměnné nejsou příliš dobrými prediktory typu akademické motivace a pro lepší vysvětlení je třeba se podívat na socioekonomický status, výchovné styly apod.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the research of academic motivation, in connection with perceived autonomy, clarity of self-concept and self-esteem. The data (N = 1060) were collected as a part of the longitudinal study On journey to education which is held under the auspices of Masaryk University. We measured the types of motivation using the self-determination theory and we assumed that they would be related to the other examined variables. We found that students are motivated more by extrinsic motivation M = 5.19; SD = 0.99, intrinsic motivation reaches the average of M = 4.4; SD = 1.08 and amotivation M = 2.18, SD = 1.3. Gender differences were found in the extrinsic motivation, where women had, on average, higher extrinsic motivation than men. Other differences were found in the intrinsic motivation to accomplish, the extrinsic identified and extrinsic introjected motivation, in all of these women had a higher average than men. Furthermore, it was confirmed that a higher level of perceived autonomy is associated with a higher degree of self-concept clarity (r = .338, R2 = 0.114), and the clarity of self-concept also positively correlates with self-esteem (r = .41, R2 = 0.171). Regression models were used to determine whether we could predict the type of motivation based on self-esteem, perceived autonomy and clarity of self-concept. The intrinsic motivation was explained only by 6.6 %, the extrinsic motivation by 0.8 % and the amotivation by 8 %. It seems that our independent variables are not very good predictors for the academic motivation, and for better explanation, we need to look at socio-economic status, educational styles, and so on.
