Competencies of sustainability managers

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je prozkoumat oblast kompetencí manažerů a manažerek udržitelnosti působících v České republice, které jsou potřeba k plnění organizačních cílů v udržitelnosti a dále zmapovat způsoby, jakými manažeři své znalosti a dovednosti získávají. Práce je napsána jako explorativní studie. Design výzkumu je kvalitativní. Praktická část práce je založena na rozhovorech s manažery udržitelnosti velkých firem z různých oblastí trhu (telekomunikace, energetika, food and beverages, retail). K analýze a interpretaci dat je použita tematická analýza, jejíchž součástí je dvouúrovňové kódování dat. Výsledky výzkumu ukazují rozdíl mezi potřebnými kompetencemi manažerů a manažerek udržitelnosti. Tento rozdíl vzniká na základě odlišné náplně práce a různé míry vlivu na podnikové procesy a tvorbu hodnoty. Výsledky zároveň odkrývají i specifické kompetence potřebné pro výkon práce manažerů udržitelnosti, účinné formy vzdělávání a překážky stojící na cestě k vyšší udržitelnosti organizací.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to explore the competencies of sustainability managers operating in the Czech Republic, which are needed to meet organizational goals in sustainability and to further map the ways in which managers acquire their knowledge and skills. The work is written as an exploratory study. Research design is qualitative. The practical part is based on interviews with sustainability managers of large companies from various market areas (telecommunication, energy, food and beverages, retail). Thematic analysis is used to analyze and interpret the data, the process includes two-level data coding. The research results show the difference of required competencies among sustainability managers. This difference arises from different work responsibilities and different degree of influence on core business processes and value creation. The results also reveal specific competencies needed to perform the work of sustainability managers, effective forms of education and obstacles standing on the path to higher level of sustainability in organizations.
