Carnival in the Basque Autonomous Community

Abstract:

Tématem diplomové práce je analýza utváření a fixace kolektivní identity Basků. Kolektivní identita je souborem jedinečných představ, hodnot a tradic konkrétní kulturní skupiny. Práce se zaměřuje na analýzu tradičního baskického karnevalu ve městě Donostia - San Sebastián. Zvláštní pozornost bude věnována zachycení a popisu symboliky karnevalu a jeho roli coby rituální zkušenosti v utváření kolektivní identity. Z teoretického hlediska bude práce vycházet z konceptů symbolické antropologie Victora Turnera a jeho analýzy průběhu rituálů. Součástí diplomové práce je také audiovizuální práce, která zaznamená průběh karnevalu v Donostii - San Sebastián s cílem identifikovat jeho roli v životě místních obyvatel.

Abstract:

The thesis analyses the formation and fixation of the Basque collective identity. Collective identity is a set of unique ideas, values and traditions of a particular cultural group. The thesis focuses on the traditional Basque carnival in the city of Donostia - San Sebastián. Particular attention will be paid to capturing and describing the symbolism of the carnival and its role as a ritual experience in the formation of collective identity. From a theoretical point of view, the thesis is based on Victor Turner's concepts of symbolic anthropology and his analysis of the process of rituals. The thesis also includes an audiovisual work which records the course of the carnival in Donostia - San Sebastián in order to identify its role in the lives of the local population.
