The Otherness in Jerzy Kosinski´s The Painted Bird

Abstract:

The methodological basis of the bachelor thesis will be the theory of otherness, in the introductory part the author will clasify the concept of "otherness". In the analytical part of Kosinski's novel, the author will examine the artistic means by which the otherness is expressed and how it is approached by the community in which the protagonist of the novel finds himself. In the forefront will be the depiction of violence faced by the protagonist and his defence mechanisms. The aim of the bachelor thesis is to find out how the intolerant society in the tense times of the Second World War shapes the protagonist's character.

Abstract:

Metodologickým východiskem této práce bude teorie jinakosti, na jejímž základě v úvodní části autorka objasní pojem jinakost "otherness". V analytické části románu Kosinského bude autorka zkoumat, jakými uměleckými prostředky je jinakost vyjádřena a jak k ní přistupuje společenství, v němž se protagonista románu ocitá. V centru pozornosti bude zobrazení násilí a protagonistovy obranné mechanismy, jimiž mu bezejmenná hlavní postava čelí. Cílem práce je zjistit, jak netolerantní společnost ve vypjaté době 2. světové války utváří charakter hlavní postavy.
