Roger Scruton's Formal and Aesthetic Theory of Imagination

Anotácia:

Přítomná diplomová práce se zabývá formální estetickou teorií imaginace dle Rogera Scrutona, kterou předkládá v Art and Imagination, taktéž však v Aesthetics of Music či Aesthetic Understanding. Zpočátku zkoumáme stručně historii pojmu imaginace od Aristotela po současný kognitivismus. Následně se obracíme na teorii Rogera Scrutona. Nabízíme teoreticko-filosofické pozadí teorie imaginace dle Rogera Scrutona. Následně prezentujeme samotnou Scrutonovou koncepci imaginace. Současně se zaměřujeme na důsledky celé koncepce pro povahu estetických deskripcí a soudů, respektive na střet Scrutona s estetickým realismem.

Abstract:

The present diploma thesis deals with Roger Scruton aesthetic theory of faculty of imagination presented in Art and Imagination, Aesthetics of Music and The Aesthetic Understanding: Essays in the Philosophy of Art and Culture. We, firstly, provide short introduction to the history of the idea of imagination as introduced by Aristotle and finally found in context of contemporary cognitivism. Thereafter we present wider analytical and philosophical background of the theory of imagination developed by Roger Scruton. At the same time we focus on consequences of the theory for the nature of aesthetic descriptions and judgements, that is its denial of aesthetic property realism.
