Excessive digital media use in the context of problematic behaviours among adolescents

Abstract:

Táto dizertačná práca poskytuje vhľad do problematiky excesívneho používania digitálnych médií u adolescentov, súvisiacich faktorov a súbežný výskyt excesívneho používania digitálnych médií s viacerými typmi problémového správania. Integruje zistenia štyroch recenzovaných štúdií. Údaje pre tieto štúdie boli zozbierané z dvoch prieskumov veľkých reprezentatívnych vzoriek českých a slovenských adolescentov, ktorí sa zúčastnili štúdie Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC). Podľa zistení týchto štúdií zohrávajú pri excesívnom používaní digitálnych médií dôležitú úlohu sociálne faktory, konkrétne problémové susedstvo. Zistilo sa tiež, že s excesívnym používaním digitálnych médií súvisia aj emocionálne a behaviorálne ťažkosti. Behaviorálne ťažkosti sa zdajú byť obzvlášť dôležité pre pochopenie rôznorodosti problémového správania medzi adolescentmi, vrátane excesívneho používania digitálnych médií. Vo všeobecnosti sa potvrdil súbežný výskyt viacerých typov problémového správania a identifikovali sa potenciálne faktory vhodné pre prevenciu a pre ďalší výskum. Zistenia ďalej naznačujú existenciu iných mechanizmov, ktoré nie sú zahrnuté v štúdiách. Ďalej sa preukázalo, že súbežný výskyt viacerých typov problémového správania je relatívne podobný bez ohľadu na rod. Skúmalo sa aj špecifické excesívne správanie súvisiace s digitálnymi médiami (t. j. problematické používanie sociálnych sietí). Overené boli psychometrické vlastnosti škály Social Media Disorder Scale. Vo všeobecnosti škála vykazovala vhodné psychometrické vlastnosti. Boli však zistené malé porušenia invariancie merania a sieťová analýza ukázala významné residuálne vzťahy medzi položkami.

Abstract:

This doctoral thesis provides an insight into the issue of excessive use of digital media among adolescents, its related factors, and the co-occurrence with other forms of problematic behaviours. It integrates and synthesises the findings of four peer-reviewed studies. The data for these studies were collected from two surveys of large representative samples of Czech and Slovak adolescents that participated in the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study (HBSC). According to the findings of these studies, social factors play an important role in excessive digital media use, specifically problematic neighbourhoods. Internalising and externalising difficulties have also been found to be associated with the excessive use of digital media. Externalising difficulties seem particularly critical in understanding the diversity of problematic behaviours among adolescents, including excessive digital media use. In general, the co-occurrence of problematic behaviours was mainly confirmed, and potential factors for prevention and further research have been identified. The findings further suggest the existence of other underlying mechanisms that are not involved in the studies. It is further demonstrated that the co-occurence of problematic behaviours is relatively similar among males and females. Specific excessive digital media-related behaviour (i.e., problematic social media use) was also examined. In particular the psychometric properties of the Social Media Disorder Scale were verified. In general, the Social Media Disorder Scale displayed solid psychometric properties. However, small violations of measurement invariance were detected, and the network analysis showed meaningful residual relationships between the items.
