Connection of engine sound and drivers speed estimation

Abstract:

Táto práca sa pokúsila nájsť súvislosť medzi zvukom motora a odhadom rýchlosti vodičom vozidla. Túto súvislosť sme sa pokúsili odhaliť pomocou experimentu. Pre čo najlepšiu simuláciu reality sme pre realizáciu experimentu použili dve videá prehrávané na počítači spolu s bezdrôtovými slúchadlami s technológiou aktívneho potláčania zvuku (A.N.C.). V oboch videách figurovali tri motorové vozidlá. Pre čo najlepšie výsledky sa vozidlá odlišovali motorizáciou a to: benzínový motor, dieselový motor a elektromotor. Úlohou respondenta bolo zoradiť vozidlá v oboch videách podľa rýchlosti. Keďže všetky vozidlá išli rovnakou rýchlosťou (v prvom videu 50 km/h a v druhom 90 km/h), jediný pozorovateľný rozdiel bol zvuk. U respondentov sme sledovali vybrané poradia podľa súvislosti s vopred vytvorenými hypotézami (H1, H2 alebo H3). Tieto poradia sme potom štatisticky testovali. Medzi najzaujímavejšie výsledky patrí napríklad fakt, že pre ženské vodičky bola súvislosť zvuku motora s odhadom rýchlosti vozidla oveľa silnejšia (p = 0,054). Navyše, pri rýchlosti 90 km/h drvivá väčšina vodičov (p = 0,071) považuje elektromobil za najrýchlejšie vozidlo, čo podporuje hypotézu H2.

Abstract:

This work attempted to find a correlation between engine sound and the driver's estimation of vehicle speed. We have tried to reveal this relation by means of an experiment. To best simulate the reality, we used two videos played on a computer along with wireless headphones with Active Noise Cancellation (A.N.C.) technology to perform the experiment. Both videos featured three motor vehicles. For best results, the vehicles differed in their motorization, namely: a gasoline engine, a diesel engine, and an electric motor. The respondent's task was to rank the vehicles in both videos by speed. As all vehicles were travelling at the same speed (50 km/h in the first video and 90 km/h in the second), the only observable difference was the sound. For the respondents, we observed the selected rankings according to the association with the previously formed hypotheses (H1, H2 or H3). We then statistically tested these rankings. Among the most interesting results, for example, was the fact that for female drivers the association of engine sound with vehicle speed estimation was much stronger (p = 0.054). Moreover, at 90 km/h, the vast majority of drivers (p = 0.071) considered the EV to be the fastest vehicle, supporting hypothesis H2.
