Preparation of highly structured hydrophobic and oleophobic layers

Abstract:

The aim of the dissertation is to present methods of preparation of non-wettable layers and examination of their functional properties. The experiments carried out, the selection of precursors and methods of diagnosing the resulting products are closely linked to the results of the projects in which I worked as a participant in the research team. The first part deals with introduction to the issue of wetting phenomenon, the variety of methods of preparation of non-wetting layers and the properties pointing to application potential. The experimental results themselves are divided into three chapters. The first is devoted to the formation of hydrophobic layers for metals using electrolysis. The section dealing with electrodeposition contains a selection of usable precursors such as myristic acid, stearic acid, perfluorooctanoic acid, Teflon, polyvinylidene fluoride and others after optimization of preparation conditions. For samples, surface topography, roughness, wetting for water, surface free energy and chemical composition are evaluated. For selected samples, tribology is studied. At the end of the chapter, a simple method of observing and evaluating the freezing of drops on non-wetting surfaces is given. Second chapter deals with the preparation of layers in order to create a biologically active surface on which organisms from the aqueous environment will not be shelled. The chosen organism is algae of the genus Klebsormidium. The layers are based on preparations containing titanium dioxide with the addition of bentonite, colloidal silica, hydrophobic agent UltraEverDry or alkoxide coating. Topography, roughness and chemical composition are studied on surfaces. An NOx conversion test is carried out to detect photocatalytic activity of layers. Furthermore, the samples are tested for biofouling and its evaluation consists of the extraction of chlorophyll a. The last chapter binds freely to the second, with surfaces prepared on the basis of a selected preparation method containing titanium dioxide, hydrophobization agent and combinations thereof. In order to increase the resistance to removal and positive effect on surface wetting for water, they were further modified using a plasma slit nozzle with discharge using gas composition of argon+nitrogen and argon + octafluorocyclobuthane. Roughness, surface topography, chemical composition were observed on the samples. A new method exploring biofouling has been proposed, simulating situations arising from heavy rains and short-term flooding. The test organism was Chlorella kessleri. Highly hydrophobic samples containing titanium dioxide were prepared with very little capture of organisms on the surface even after 24 hours of exposition to aqueous environment. Selected samples were tested for photocatalytic activity by the methyllene blue degradation test. During the experiments, both electrolysis and spraycoating produced highly hydrophobic and oleophobic layers. Tests on the freezing of liquid on the surface have shown that prepared layers as anti-icing protection surfaces are unsuitable. In the case of biological activity, the combination of titanium dioxide and hydrophobic agent has proven itself. With the plasma modification using the mixture of argon+octafluorocyclobuthane, there was an increase in non-wetting and inhibition of algae removal on the surface. Thus, surfaces were prepared, where cells were very limited to adhere, and in case of removal there was an effective reduction in cell number due to photocatalytic activity of used agent.

Abstract:

Cieľom dizertačnej práce je predložiť metódy príprav nezmáčavých vrstiev a skúmanie ich funkčných vlastností. Realizované experimenty, výber prekurzorov a metód diagnostiky výsledných produktov je úzko spätý s výsledkami projektov, v ktorých som bola účastníkom riešiteľského tímu. Prvá časť sa zaoberá úvodom do problematiky zmáčavosti, rôznorodosťou metód príprav nezmáčavých vrstiev a vlastnosťami poukazujúcimi na aplikačný potenciál. Samotné experimentálne výsledky sú rozdelené do troch kapitol. Prvá sa venuje tvorbe hydrofóbnych vrstiev na kovy pomocou elektrolýzy. Časť pojednávajúca elektrodepozíciu obsahuje výber použiteľných prekurzorov ako je kyselina myristová, stearová, perfluórooktánová, teflon, polyvinylidénfluorid a iné po optimalizácii podmienok prípravy. Pre vzorky je vyhodnotená povrchová topografia, drsnosť, zmáčavosť pre vodu, povrchová energia a chemické zloženie. Pre vybrané vzorky je skúmaná tribológia vrstiev. V závere kapitoly je uvedená jednoduchá metóda pozorovania a vyhodnocovania mrazenia kvapiek na nezmáčavých povrchoch. Druhá kapitola pojednáva prípravu vrstiev s cieľom vytvoriť biologicky aktívny povrch, na ktorom nebudú ulpievať organizmy z vodného prostredia. Zvolený organizmus je riasa rodu Klebsormidium. Vrstvy sú na báze prípravkov obsahujúcich oxid titaničitý s prídavkom bentonitu, koloídneho oxidu kremičitého, hydrofobizačného činidla UltraEverDry alebo na báze alkoxydového náteru. Na povrchoch je skúmaná topografia, drsnosť, chemické zloženie. Realizovaný je test konverzie NOx pre zistenie fotokatayltickej aktivity vrstiev. Ďalej sú vzorky testované na biofouling, pričom jeho vyhodnotenie spočíva v extrakcii chlorofylu a. Tretia kapitola voľne naväzuje na druhú, pričom pripravené boli povrchy na báze vybraného prípravku obsahujúceho oxid titaničitý, hydrofibizačného činidla a ich kombinácií. Pre zvýšenie odolnosti voči záchytu a pozitívny vplyv na nezmáčavosť povrchu pre vodu boli ďalej modifikované pomocou štrbinovej plazmovej trysky plazmou o zložení argón+dusík a argón + oktafluórocyklobután. Na vzorkách bola pozorovaná drsnosť, topografia povrchu, chemické zloženie. Bola navrhnutá nová metóda skúmajúca biofouling, ktorá simuluje situácie vznikajúce pri prívalových dažďoch a krátkodobých záplavách. Testovacím organizmom bola Chlorella kessleri. Podarilo sa pripraviť vysoko nezmáčavé vzorky obsahujúce oxid titaničitý s veľmi malým záchytom organizmov na povrchu i po 24 h zaplavenia. Vybrané vzorky boli testované na fotokatalytickú aktivitu testom degradácie methylénovej modrej. Počas experimentov sa poradilo pripraviť ako eletrolýzou, tak i spraycoatingom vysoko hydrofóbne a oleofóbne vrstvy. Testy mrznutia kvapaliny na povrchu preukázali nevhodnosť využitia vrstiev ako beznámrazové povrchy. V prípade biologickej aktivity sa osvedčila kombinácia oxidu titaničitého a hydrofobizačného činidla. Pomocou plazmovej úpravy zmesou argón + oktafluórocyklobután dochádzalo k zvýšeniu nezmáčavosti a menšiemu záchytu rias na povrchu. Boli tak pripravené povrchy, kde sa veľmi ťažko zachytávali bunky a v prípade záchytu dochádzalo k efektívnej redukcii počtu buniek vďaka fotokatalytickej aktivite.
