The Rational and the Social: Philosophy and Sociology in Dispute over the Nature of Science

Abstract:

Záměrem předložené práce je podat filosofickou a sociologickou analýzu konfliktu mezi racionalistickou filosofií vědy a silným programem sociologie vědění, který se odehrál zhruba v poslední čtvrtině 20. století. Tato analýza si klade za cíl nalézt odpověď na otázku, proč mezi oběma stranami došlo ke sporu a proč se tento spor nikdy nepodařilo úspěšně vyřešit. V první části práce ukazuji, že klíčovou roli v této věci sehrála nesouměřitelnost konceptuálních rámců obou přístupů, která jejich představitelům znemožňovala vést vzájemnou diskusi ve společných termínech, a byla tak příčinou vzájemných neshod ohledně toho, co silný program ve skutečnosti tvrdí a co nikoliv. V části druhé následně obracím svoji pozornost k otázce, jaký je původ této nesouměřitelnosti, přičemž odpověď na tuto otázku hledám ve společensko-politickém kontextu, v němž se oba tyto přístupy ke zkoumání vědy utvářely. Jak se v práci snažím ukázat, oba tyto přístupy se vyvíjely v rámci dvou protichůdných a vzájemně nesouměřitelných tradic společensko-politického myšlení, které se manifestovaly v průběhu politických debat ohledně otázky sociální odpovědnosti vědy a žádoucího vztahu mezi vědou a státem, kde stoupenci racionalistické filosofie vědy stáli jednotně na straně požadavku nezávislosti vědy a státu, zatímco lidé stojící za vznikem silného programu prosazovali opačný požadavek státního řízení vědeckého výzkumu. V této souvislosti tvrdím, že tato skutečnost není věcí pouhé náhody, jelikož mezi oběma přístupy a příslušnými politickými stanovisky existuje nutná konceptuální spojitost. Na základě provedené analýzy pak předkládám argumenty ve prospěch tvrzení, že 1) oba přístupy se nacházejí v oprávněném sporu, neboť jejich názory ohledně vědy a vědeckého poznání jsou skutečně vzájemně neslučitelné, a že 2) tento spor je racionálně neřešitelný, neboť se nejedná o spor mezi dvěma přístupy, z nichž by bylo možno jeden nezávisle označit jako objektivně lepší než ten druhý, ale jedná se ve skutečnosti o konflikt dvou protichůdných politických stanovisek - dvou odlišných souborů hodnot, které nelze racionálně posuzovat, stejně jako nelze racionálně rozhodnout, zda jsou objektivně "lepší" hodnoty politické pravice nebo levice.

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to provide a philosophical and sociological analysis of the conflict between the rationalist philosophy of science and the strong programme in the sociology of knowledge, which occurred roughly in the last quarter of the 20th century. This analysis aims to answer the question of why the conflict between the two parties arose in the first place and why it has never been successfully resolved. In the first part I claim that the key role in this regard was played by the incommensurability of the respective conceptual frameworks of both approaches, which made it impossible for their representatives to lead a mutual discussion in common terms, and was the cause of mutual disagreements about what the strong programme actually says and what it does not. In the second part of the thesis I turn my attention to the question of the very origin of this incommensurability, and I seek the answer in the socio-political context in which these two approaches to the study of science were developed. I try to demonstrate that both of these approaches have evolved in the context of two opposing and mutually incommensurable traditions of socio-political thought, which manifested during the political debates on the question of social responsibility of science and the desired relationship between science and the state, where the representatives of the rationalist philosophy of science were uniformly on the side of the separation of science and the state, while the people behind the emergence of a strong programme promoted the opposite stance of state management of scientific research. In this context, I argue that this is not a matter of mere chance and that there is a necessary conceptual link between the two approaches and the respective political opinions. On the basis of the provided analysis I argue that 1) both approaches are in a legitimate conflict, as their views on science and scientific knowledge are indeed mutually incompatible, and that 2) the conflict is rationally irresolvable, because it is not an example of a dispute between two approaches, one of which could be independently described as objectively "better" than the other, but it is in fact a clash between two opposing political opinions - two different sets of values that cannot be rationally assessed, just as it is impossible to rationally decide whether it is the values of the political right or left which are "better" than the others.
