Women's rights in Islam: the status of women in Muslim society through the lens of evolutionary theory

Abstract:

Ambicí této diplomové práce je využít poznatků věd o člověku (life sciences) k analýze postavení ženy v islámu a zapojit tak do výzkumu problematiky mezinárodních vztahů nepříliš obvyklou perspektivu evoluční teorie. Cílem práce je na základě poznatků evoluční psychologie analyzovat vztah islámu k ženským právům. Předmětem práce je interpretovat z pohledu evoluční teorie, jakým způsobem se na ženu dívá islám ve své fundamentální podobě a nabídnout tak vysvětlení původu norem, které je upravují, s ohledem na kulturu, ve které vznikaly. Analýza postavení ženy v islámské společnosti bude zasazena do širšího kontextu sporu o univerzalismus a partikularismus. Závěry analýzy by měly pomoci zodpovědět otázku, zda je možné a vhodné v arabských zemích uplatnit koncept univerzálních lidských práv a „západní“ pojetí postavení ženy ve společnosti.

Abstract:

The ambition of this thesis is to use knowledge of the life sciences to analyze the status of women in Islam and to engage the perspective of evolutionary theory in the research of international relations. The objective of the work is to analyze the relationship between Islam and women's rights based on the findings of evolutionary psychology. The aim of the thesis is to interpret the status of woman in Islam in its fundamental form from the perspective of evolutionary theory and offer explanations of the origin of the rules which govern them, with regard to the culture in which they originated. The analysis of the status of women in Islamic society will be set in the broader context of the dispute about universalism and particularism. The outputs of the analyzes should help to answer the question whether it is possible and appropriate to apply the concept of universal human rights and "Western" conception of the status of women in the Arab countries.
