Student's motivation for transition from primary school to multi-year gymnasium

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zaměřuje na osmiletá gymnázia s cílem popsat vznik a podstatu motivace k přechodu na tyto školy u vybraných respondentů, promítání motivace do přípravy žáků na přijímací zkoušky a vnímání problematiky přechodu a přípravy rodiči a třídními učiteli. Teoretická část práce je rozdělena do dvou větších celků, v prvním charakterizuji dítě mladšího a středního školního věku, oblast motivace, sebepojetí, sebehodnocení a autoregulace. Druhá část obsahuje stručný popis primárního vzdělávání v České republice a dále téma přechodů mezi primárním a sekundárním stupněm vzdělávání. Na teoretickém podkladě je následně vystavěna empirická část práce, v níž jsou prezentovány výsledky rozhovorů s žáky 5. ročníků hlásícími se na víceleté gymnázium, jejich rodiči a třídními učiteli.

Abstract:

This thesis represents an attempt to describe the origin and essence of the selected participants’ motivation in getting enrolled in multi-year gymnasium. It also delves into how this motivation gets reflected in the preparations for the required entrance exams as well as the perception of the transfer process itself by the applicants’ parents and class teachers. The preliminary theoretical part of the thesis is subdivided into two substantial wholes, the first subpart characterizes children in younger and middle school age, the scope of their motivation, self-understanding, self-assessment and self-regulation. The second subpart offers a short comprehensive description of primary education in the Czech Republic, which is followed by a treatment of the problems involving transfers between the primary and secondary educational stages. The subsequent practical part of the thesis is based on the theoretical foundations presented in the first part. It features the results of the interviews carried out with the pupils who have applied for enrolment in multi-year gymnasium, their parents and class teachers.
