Efficiency of defences of Sepsis flies against several predators

Abstract:

Populace, které jsou rozdělené do morfotypů, mohou čelit snížené predaci díky omezenému počtu odlišných podnětů, na které se predátor dokáže soustředit. Unikátní pohlavně specifický polyfenismus nalezneme u mouchy Sepsis thoracica: samice jsou malé a černé; samci jsou buď malí „melanici,“ nebo velcí „jantaři“ s málo přechodnými fenotypy. Obě samčí morfy poskytují svým nositelům benefity v různých kontextech. Máme důkazy pro myrmekomorfii u melanických jedinců. Kromě toho by tento druh měl disponovat chemickou obranou. V této závěrečné práci jsem na základě více znaků hodnotila, zda se jantaři podobají hojnému mravenci Lasius niger. Abych srovnala charakter a efektivitu obrany morf, nabídla jsem je dvěma druhům pavouků – Pardosa agrestis, aktivnímu lovci, který se vyhýbá mravencům, a Xysticus sp., pasivnímu lovci, který je přijímá. Nakonec jsem empirické míry akceptance morf použila v počítačové simulaci fenotypové selekce u S. thoracica, abych vysvětlila, jak predace ovlivňuje optimální alokaci zdrojů do velikosti a melanismu. Jantaři nebyli myrmekomorfní. Proti P. agrestis mouchy zřejmě využívaly nepříjemné těkavé látky, výrazná chování a taktiky specifické pro morfy: jantaři byli agresivní a měli lepší schopnost úniku, ale čelili více útokům, což naznačuje myrmekomorfii u melanických much. Celkově P. agrestis chytil méně jantarových jedinců, jelikož je málokdy dokázal přemoci. Žádná obrana nebyla efektivní proti Xysticus sp., který přijímal obě morfy, ale jantary více než melaniky. Jako ve skutečné populace, simulace vyprodukovala oba extrémy melanizace a málo přechodných fenotypů. Optimální poměr morf byl modulován složením společenstva predátorů. Při silném predačním tlaku se v některých populacích fixovaly neadaptivní hodnoty znaků vlivem genetického driftu. Biologicky to může vést k úniku z lokálního optima nebo k alopatrické speciaci

Abstract:

Populations divided into morphotypes can face reduced predation thanks to the limited number of different stimuli on which a predator can focus. A unique sex-specific polyphenism is found in the fly Sepsis thoracica: the females are small and black; the males are either small "melanics" or large "ambers" with few intermediates. Both male morphs bring their carriers benefits in various contexts. We have evidence for myrmecomorphy in the melanic individuals. Additionally, this species should possess a chemical defence. In this thesis I used a multi-trait approach to evaluate whether the ambers resemble the abundant ant Lasius niger. To compare the quality and efficiency of the morphs’ defences, I offered them to two species of spiders – Pardosa agrestis, an active hunter that avoids ants, and Xysticus sp., an ambush predator that accepts them. Lastly, I used the empirical morph acceptance rates in a computer simulation of S. thoracica phenotype selection to illuminate how predation affects the optimal allocation of resources into size and melanism. The ambers were not myrmecomorphic. Against P. agrestis, the flies appeared to use foul volatiles, conspicuous behaviours and morph-specific tactics: the ambers were aggressive and had better evasion skills yet they faced more attacks, which implies myrmecomorphy in the melanic flies. Overall, P. agrestis captured fewer ambers because it was rarely able to subdue them. No defences were efficient against Xysticus sp. which accepted both morphs, but the ambers more so than the melanics. Like in a real population, the simulation produced the two melanisation extremes and few intermediates. The optimum morph ratio was modulated by the predator community composition. Under strong predation pressures, non-adaptive trait values were fixed in some populations due to genetic drift. Biologically, this could lead to a release from local optima, or allopatric speciation.
