V poslednej dobe sa vyskytuje stále viac dôkazov o vstupe nie len anorganických, ale aj organických polutantov do prostredia. Významnou zložkou organického znečistenia sú liečivá a produkty ich transformácie. Svetová spotreba liečiv má tendenciu stúpať, a preto môžeme očakávať aj ich rastúcu prítomnosť v životnom prostredí.
