Symbolism of animals and monsters in the sculpture of ancient Greece

Abstract:

Bakalářská diplomová práce Symbolika zvířat a monster v antickém sochařství pojednává o třech zvířatech a z nich odvozených monstrech, která patří mezi nejčastěji zobrazovaná. Ve snaze postihnout symbolický význam daných zvířat zkoumá práce sochařské památky zvířat ve starověku a pramen jejich významovosti v podobě mytologie. Pojem sochařství zde zahrnuje sochy samostatné i skulptury zvířat v sousoších, dále pak reliéfy náhrobků a v neposlední řadě sochařskou výzdobu architektury. Časové rozmezí uváděných památek se pohybuje od archaického období starověkého umění až po období helénizmu, tedy zhruba od 7. st. př. n. l. do 1. st. n. l. Co se národů týče, je dokument orientován na Řeky, od nichž se, jak známo, příliš památek sochařského umění nedochovalo. Proto text čerpá především z literárních pramenů, pro které se předobrazem staly zejména římské kopie řeckých originálů či taktéž pomálu dochované památky literárního původu. Přímým cílem práce je vytvořit ucelený přehled symboliky zvířat a monster, o nichž je v textu řeč a také určit jejich potenciální styčné body.

Abstract:

The BA diploma thesis called Symbolism of Animals and Monsters in the Sculpture of Ancient Greece deals with three animals and the monsters derived from them which are most often depicted in the sculpture art of Ancient Greece. The thesis analyses sculptures of animals created in the ancient world and also mythology as a source of their meaning. The term sculpture (or sculpture art) includes the actual sculptures as well as sculptures of animals in sculptural groups, reliefs on gravestones and sculptures used to decorate architectural formations. The exact periodization is for the objects analyzed starts in the 7th century B.C. to the 1st century A.D. This BA thesis is orientated mostly on the Ancient Greek sculpture art. However, most of their sculpture artworks were destroyed and that is why the sources for this thesis are mostly literary documents. These documents are based on replicas of the Greek sculptures made by artists in the Roman Empire as well as on a few literary relics preserved to this time. The aim of this thesis is to establish a compact overview of symbolism of animals and mosters mentioned in the text and also to establish their potential junction points.
