Comparison of selected characteristics of conductive polymers

Abstract:

Oblast tkáňového inženýrství zažívá vzrušující pokroky směrem k výrobě inteligentních a biomimetických konstruktů jako alternativ ke klinickým terapiím. Elektricky vodivé materiály mohou mít významný dopad na tkáňové inženýrství, protože jejich elektrická stimulace zapříčiňuje stimulaci řízeného růstu buněk. Diplomová práce se právě proto věnovala přípravě a charakterizaci dvou vodivých polymerů, polypyrrolu a polyanilinu. Vodivé polymery byly v rámci experimentální práce připraveny ve dvou formách, jako koloidní disperze a jako tenké filmy. Pro vznik koloidů probíhala polymerace za přítomnosti stabilizátoru a to polyvinylalkoholu, polyvinylpyrrolidonu a nanokrystalické celulózy. Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na porovnání charakteristik připravených vodivých polymerů. Připravený polyanilin a polypyrrol byl podroben testům materiálových charakteristik, jako je povrchová energie, vodivost a velikost částic. Rovněž byla zkoumána cytokompatibilita vodivých polymerů na buněčné linii NIH/3T3. Ta zahrnovala test buněčné adheze a proliferace a test cytokompatibility využitím testu MTT. Výsledky této práce naznačují, že oba polymery v kombinaci se všemi testovanými stabilizátory mohou mít potenciál pro aplikaci v tkáňovém inženýrství.

Abstract:

The field of tissue engineering is experiencing exciting advances toward the production of intelligent and biomimetic constructs as alternatives to clinical therapies. Electrically conductive materials can have a significant impact on tissue engineering because their electrical stimulation induces the controlled growth of cells. Therefore, this thesis focused on the preparation and characterization of two conductive polymers, polypyrrole, and polyaniline. The conductive polymers were prepared in two forms in experimental work, as colloidal dispersions and as thin films. For the formation of colloids, polymerization took place in the presence of stabilizers such as polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and nanocrystalline cellulose. This master's thesis focuses on comparing the characteristics of prepared conductive polymers. The prepared polyaniline and polypyrrole were subjected to tests for material characteristics such as surface energy, conductivity, and particle size. The cytocompatibility of the conductive polymers on the NIH/3T3 cell line was also examined. This included tests for cell adhesion and proliferation, as well as a cytokine compatibility test using the MTT assay. The results of this study suggest that both polymers, in combination with all tested stabilizers, may have potential for application in tissue engineering.
