The selected correlations between culture, family environment and self-efficacy among university students (an international comparison of the Czech and American sample)

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá vzájemným vztahem kultury, rodinného prostředí a self-efficacy. Její součástí je srovnání českého a amerického vzorku studentů vysokých škol. V teoretické části práce jsou shrnuty relevantní vědecké poznatky týkající se rodiny, self-efficacy a kultury. V empirické části diplomové práce je popsáno kvantitativní výzkumné šetření provedené v rámci této práce. Hlavním cílem výzkumu bylo ověření souvislostí mezi uvedenými proměnnými. Výzkumný soubor tvořili čeští a američtí vysokoškolští studenti. Vybrané faktory rodinného prostředí byly měřeny pomocí dotazníku Škála rodinného prostředí a jeho anglickou verzí vlastní konstrukce. Doplňující informace byly získány vlastním dotazníkem mapujícím základní charakteristiky rodiny respondenta. Self-efficacy bylo měřeno škálou General Self-Efficacy Scale a jeho českou verzí, tj. Dotazníkem obecné vlastní efektivity. Výsledky výzkumu poukázaly na vzájemnou provázanost vybraných proměnných. Byly zjištěny interkulturní rozdíly v úrovni self-efficacy i ve vnímaném rodinném prostředí. Zároveň byl zjištěn vztah mezi self-efficacy a některými charakteristikami rodinného prostředí. Byly rovněž nalezeny rozdíly ve vnímaném rodinném prostředí na základě rodinného uspořádání, velikosti rodiny a vzdělání rodičů respondentů.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with a relationship between culture, family environment and self-efficacy. It includes an international comparison of the Czech and American university students. The theoretical part of the thesis is focused on defining main concepts of the research issue which are family, self-efficacy and culture. The empirical part introduces a quantitative research that was conducted in this thesis. The main goal of the research was to investigate the relationship between the factors mentioned above. The research sample consisted of 103 Czech and 95 American participants. For measuring the selected characteristics we used the Family Environment Scale and General Self-Efficacy Scale. We also constructed our own questionnaire in order to measure some of the demographic characteristics. The results of the research show a significant relationship between the studied factors. We found the intercultural differences in the perceived self-efficacy and some of the characteristics of the family environment. The results also indicate the associations between the self-efficacy and some of the family environment characteristics. Furthermore, there were found differences in the family environment based on the family structure, size and the parents’ education.
