Collective Trauma in Art Spiegelman's Graphic Novels Maus and In the Shadow of No Towers

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the collective trauma depicted in Art Spiegelman?s two graphic novels Maus and In the Shadow of No Towers, exploring its reasons and symptoms on examples of individual characters presented in Spiegelman?s books. It analyzes after-effects of trauma visible in Vladek Spiegelman, Art Spiegelman?s father who lived through the Holocaust and whose story is reflected in Maus, and the manifestations of trauma seen in Art, although he was born after the Second World War. It thus shows that Holocaust survivors? trauma can be transmitted to their children, called the ?Second Generation?. Another part of the thesis is devoted to the exploration of the American trauma presented in Spiegelman?s second book In the Shadow of No Towers. It presents the destiny of Art Spiegelman and his family after Vladek?s death. They witness the fall of the Twin Towers, experiencing the national tragedy together. This thesis analyzes the trauma described in the book, to what extent Spiegelman?s perception of the event is influenced by his ?inherited? trauma and to what extent the subsequent political situation influences the healing process of Art and of the whole city.

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá kolektivním traumatem zachyceným v grafických románech Arta Spiegelmana Maus a In the Shadow of No Towers a zkoumá jeho příčiny a symptomy na příkladech jednotlivých postav Spiegelmanových knih. Analyzuje důsledky traumatu pozorovatelné na Vladkovi Spiegelmanovi, otci Arta Spiegelmana, který prožil holocaust a jehož příběh Art zachycuje ve své knize Maus, stejně jako projevy traumatu viditelné na Artovi, ačkoli se narodil po druhé světové válce. Tato práce ukazuje, že trauma těch, kdo přežili holocaust, se může přenášet na jejich děti, kterým se říká ?druhá generace?. Další část této diplomové práce je věnovaná výzkumu amerického národního traumatu zobrazeného ve Spiegelmanově druhé knize In the Shadow of No Towers. Prezentuje úděl Arta Spiegelmana and jeho nejbližší rodiny po smrti Vladka. Stanou se svědky pádu Dvojčat, přičemž prožívají tuto národní tragédii společně. Tato práce analyzuje trauma zachycené v této knize, do jaké míry je Artovo vnímání této události ovlivněno jeho ?zděděným? traumatem a do jaké míry nadcházející politická situace ovlivňuje léčebný proces Arta a celého města.
