The Clockwork Orange: The Picture of Violence and Suppresion of Human Individuality

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the analysis of the novel A Clockwork Orange by British writer Anthony Burgess. The essential theme of this work is oppression of the individual, elimination of the ability to express their free will by society and also evaluation of such behaviour. However, Burgess' characters are not black and white and in the course of the book both the main and secondary characters are subjected to criticism of the author. Burgess often uses motives of beauty and combines them with something that is unpleasant, for example classical music reflects feelings of strength and aggression, which makes the very concept of good and bad feel ambiguous. The author's own experiences inspire story in many ways and he also offers his own opinion on the situations that occur throughout the book. The thesis will focus mainly on the protagonist and will try to formulate how the author works with individual elements of the book such as violence, freedom, setting or language.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na rozbor románu Mechanický pomeranč britského spisovatele Anthonyho Burgesse. Pro tuto práci je stěžejním tématem útlak jedince, zabraňování projevům jeho svobodné vůle ze strany společnosti a zároveň zhodnocení takového chování. Burgessovy postavy nicméně nejsou černobílé a jak hlavní tak vedlejší charaktery jsou v průběhu knihy vystaveny kritice ze strany autora. Burgess často využívá motivů krásy a spojuje je s něčím nepříjemným, v klasické hudbě se tak například odráží pocit síly a agrese, díky čemuž samotný koncept dobra a zla nabývá na nejednoznačnosti. Autor v knize často čerpá ze svých osobních zážitků a zkušeností a zároveň poskytuje na probíhající události svůj vlastní názor. Práce se bude soustředit převážně na hlavní postavu a pokusí se vyjádřit, jak autor pracuje s jednotlivými obsahovými i formálními prvky jako jsou násilí, svoboda, prostředí či jazyk.
