Verification of the potential existence of instinctual fear of predators in humans

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se pokouší na základě testování respondentů pomocí jednoduchých obrázkových testů dokázat, že lidská psychika nese instinkty a zřejmě i vzorce chování nejen nedávné, ale také staré stovky miliónů let. Evoluce dramaticky mění tvar těla a fyziologické funkce, ale mnohé psychické dispozice přetrvávají v původní podobě a oslabují se velmi pomalu. Jako model pro otestování této hypotézy byl zvolen strach z predátorů, s kterými jsme se pravděpodobně setkávali během evoluce. Pro doplnění testu a pro srovnání byli také testováni tvorové, kteří měli působit neutrálně, nebo naopak roztomile, (pedomorfní přitažlivost). Zda byl jen pro kontrast využit poměrně známy jev o pozitivním hodnocení savčích mláďat a savců s pedomorfními rysy. Výsledky prokázaly strach z predátorů až z ordoviku, tedy zhruba před 450 milióny let, a samozřejmě i z predátorů z pozdějších období. Pro srovnání byli přidáni také pavouci a hadi, protože strach z nich už je poměrně dobře prozkoumaný a překvapivě se neumístili na čelních místech. I když obrázek hodnocený jako nejvíce děsivý či nebezpečný obsadil nikdy neexistující tvor, u kterého můžeme najít hadí rysy. Potvrdilo se také, že je velmi důležité, zda zobrazený tvor vypadá útočně, či jen polehává, pak je hodnocený více jako neutrální. Závěrečná hypotéza tedy postuluje, že instinkty v našem podvědomí během evoluce podléhají pomaleji změnám než morfologie našich organismů.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis attempts to prove, based on testing respondents using simple picture tests, that the human psyche carries instincts and apparently also behavioral patterns not only recent but also hundreds of millions of years old. Evolution dramatically changes body shape and physiological functions, but many mental dispositions persist in their original form and weaken very slowly. The fear of predators, which we have probably encountered during evolution, was chosen as a model to test this hypothesis. To supplement the test and for comparison, creatures were also tested that were intended to appear neutral, or even cute (pedomorphic attraction). Whether the relatively well-known phenomenon of the positive evaluation of mammalian cubs and mammals with pedomorphic features was used only for contrast. The results showed fear of predators from the Ordovician, i.e. about 450 million years ago, and of course of predators from later periods. Spiders and snakes were also added for comparison, as the fear of them is already relatively well-researched and surprisingly did not rank among the top positions. Although the picture rated as the most frightening or dangerous was occupied by a never-existing creature in which we can find snake features. It was also confirmed that it is very important whether the depicted creature looks aggressive or just lies down, then it is rated more as neutral. The final hypothesis therefore postulates that instincts in our subconscious undergo slower changes during evolution than the morphology of our organisms.
