Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages in association with obesity

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá problematikou konzumace slazených nápojů, která je dlouhodobě spojována se zvýšeným rizikem řady onemocnění. Teoretická část podává ucelený přehled aktuálních poznatků týkajících se slazených nápojů, včetně jejich definice a spotřeby. Dále se zabývá jejich vztahem k obezitě a jiným kardiometabolickým onemocněním, nealkoholovému postižení jater, onkologickým onemocněním a biologickým mechanismům. Rovněž se zaměřuje na sociální faktory ovlivňující konzumaci slazených nápojů, jako je marketing, dostupnost, daně či sociální normy a opatření. Praktická část zahrnuje výsledky, které analyzují současnou prevalenci konzumace slazených nápojů u náhodně vybraných dospělých osob středního věku. Dále se zabývá souvislostí konzumace s kardiometabolickými biomarkery a zaměřuje se také na určení prevalence konzumace slazených nápojů ve vztahu k socioekonomickým determinantám a behaviorálním rizikovým faktorům.

Abstract:

The thesis addresses the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, which have been consistently associated with an increased risk of various diseases. The theoretical part provides a comprehensive overview of current knowledge regarding sugar-sweetened beverages, including their definition and consumption. It further explores their relationship with obesity and other cardiometabolic diseases, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, oncological conditions, and biological mechanisms. Additionally, it focuses on the social factors influencing the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, such as marketing, availability, taxes, and social norms and measures. The practical part encompasses the results, which analyze the current prevalence of sugar-sweetened beverages among randomly selected middle-aged adults and evaluate the correlation between cardiometabolic biomarkers and this consumption. Furthermore, it aims to determine the prevalence of sugar-sweetened beverages consumption concerning socioeconomic determinants and behavioral risk factors.
